Answers to this month's most often asked questions

Q: My e-mail account was hacked. What should I do? How can I prevent it from happening again?

A: First of all we need to determine if your email was hacked, or somebody else's was and your email address is being forged.

If your email was hacked, the first thing to do is change your email password then check other email settings to make sure they weren't altered by the hacker. Items to look for include a changed "reply-to" address, a vacation auto-response, a signature line, etc. Look in the Sent folder to see if any message are there that you didn't personally send.

Q: When is it time to get a new computer?

A: If your computer is over 5 years old, it may be time to replace your computer. A major component inside a computer that stores the programs and all personal data is the hard drive. The average life of a hard drive is about 5 years. If your hard drive fails and needs replacing, it's just a matter of time before other components in the computer start to fail. Sometimes it's better to replace the computer after 5 years rather than fix it. Each individual's situation is different, and we can help you make an informed decision on whether to fix or replace.

Q: My bank website suggests that I protect my online activity with a program called Trusteer Rapport. Should I?

A: I do not recommend installing it at this time. We've noticed the program effects computer performance and causes noticeable slow-downs, and may not provide any additional protection than you already have with your currently installed security software.

Take a closer look at Rapport from Trusteer.

Cheap Unlicensed Computer Repair -

"You Get What You Pay For"

Do you have a friend or neighbor who "knows" computers - perhaps someone who just started fixing computers during their spare time? Do they actively keep-up with the computer industry while fixing computers on a daily basis like we do?

Computer Techs has been in business since 2003, and our technicians have over 20 years computer experience.

Our calls for service have leveled off in the past year-or-so due to an abundance of inexperienced and unlicensed computer repair people. Similar to hiring an unlicensed contractor to work on your home, it may be cheaper to go with someone else in the short term. However, you can count on Computer Techs to get the job done quickly and correctly, and we'll be available the next time you need service. We are often called to finish repairing what an amateur started or didn't fix correctly.

Thank you for trusting Computer Techs for your PC and technology help and expertise.
