Greetings!

Welcome to the July, 2012 issue of NUTRITIOUS BYTES.
Warning: Weight Loss May be Dangerous to Your Health!
Belly Fat is Toxic
Under-appreciated source of toxicity

The health benefits of getting rid of excess body fat are well appreciated, although sometimes overstated. Body fat, particularly fat around and within the abdominal organs, is an endocrine organ that sends disease-promoting signals throughout the body. For example, fat cells produce tumor necrosis factor, an inflammatory chemical. Fat cells are little inflammation factories. One of many states that can improve with weight loss is inflammation. You lose body fat and your body should be less inflamed.

There is much to gain from losing excess body fat. The dark side of weight loss involves toxicity. When the body is exposed to toxins that it cannot eliminate, it stores them. Most toxins are fat-soluble and get stored in body fat. When fat is broken down for energy, as occurs with a weight loss program, where do those toxins go? Into the bloodstream. Now, ideally, the body readily processes and eliminates them. However, the average American doesn't have ideal physiology and metabolism to always accomplish this.
Weight loss associated with more toxins
Weight loss is associated with more toxins in blood
If the toxins are not eliminated upon release from the fat cells they can do damage in the body and potentially contribute to a multitude of symptoms and chronic diseases. The body is in a sense being poisoned by weight loss. One study on subjects undergoing rapid weight loss after bariatric surgery found a shift in persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from fat stores to blood. This was associated with signs of increased liver toxicity.

Another study involved putting subjects on a very low calorie diet. Participants had measures of organochlorines (pesticides) in their blood before and after weight loss. They also had measures of thyroid hormone (T3) and resting metabolic rate (how many calories are burned at rest).
The findings were this: a very low calorie diet induced significant weight loss and was associated with increased levels of organochlorines (toxins)  in the blood. There were also reductions in T3 levels and resting metabolic rate. Apparently, the very low calorie diet caused transfer of toxins from body fat to the bloodstream where they exerted a negative effect on thyroid hormone metabolism, resulting in a slowing of the metabolic rate. When your resting metabolic rate slows down, you can't eat as many calories without regaining weight. This is a likely factor with "yo-yo" dieting.

Weight loss-increased toxins-decreased thyroid & metabolism

Does this mean that we should give up on trying to lose fat? Absolutely not! It is a warning. Be careful how you go about losing your weight. In a broader sense, be careful about your health decisions in general.

One factor that increases your chances of poisoning from weight loss is rapidity. The faster the fat is broken down, the greater the spike in toxins in the blood, which your liver will have to deal with. Everyone wants instant gratification. We want to see huge weight loss in a short period of time. This is not healthy.

Another factor very important in determining if you will poison yourself with weight loss is your nutritional status. Nutritionally-inadequate weight loss diets commonly leave the body ill-equipped to cope with the surge of toxic chemicals released from fat store. It is best to work with a board certified nutritionist or other qualified health care professional to make sure your diet is sound. Quality nutritional supplements are a must for everyone undergoing a body fat reduction program. Ideally, such an approach is tailored based on the results of special laboratory tests.

Assessing Toxicity

How Toxic Are You?

Would you like to see if your symptoms indicate a significant degree of toxicity? There is a validated symptom questionnaire that I use in my practice. To access the questionnaire, click here
