 Take your turn, serve others
cook for Benedict House
Every year, members of the PBF Family, often Care Groups, cook meals for those living in Benedict House. This year our designated week is October 1st through 5th.
We are seeking groups willing to plan, purchase and prepare a meal for the residents on October 3rd, 4th and 5th. To volunteer your group, please contact Ted Orr at 360-692-5680 or email him at tedorr@comcast.net.
Benedict House provides emergency shelter and transitional housing with supportive services for single homeless men and homeless men with children. It helps residents rebuild their lives and moves them toward permanent housing. Residents may stay for a period of up to 90 days in an emergency bed, up to 1 year in a transitional bed and up to 2 years in the family unit. At any one time about 30 men and a handful of children reside there.
Learn more about Benedict House here.
To volunteer, it typically takes a team of three to four people to serve dinner. This is often an ideal project for a PBF Care Group. One member of the service group must hold a valid food handler permit. The permit is easy to obtain online after completing the online food handler's test from the Washington Department of Health. (Please use this link from the Kitsap County Health Department. There are many illicit websites that will steal applicants' money.) It takes about 90 minutes to complete the process and costs $10. The permit is good for two years.

Parent Connections kicks off new year of Youth events
A special thanks to Vernice Koemmpel for cooking a delicious breakfast for nearly 150 youth members and their parents last Sunday at the Parent Connections gathering. The event celebrated the start of the Youth year, introducing parents and youth alike to the many staff members and volunteers who assist the program and to orient families to the events, camps, mission trips and expectations that they can anticipate. New this year assisting the Youth are Katie Loehrs, Melissa Borland, Marcia Hall and Derek and Heather Lee. Jesse Stigile, the new youth intern, was also welcomed. To keep in touch with everything Youth are doing, it's best to check their web page here.

We had more than 25 volunteers who helped with all aspects and made the concert a big success. 350 people enjoyed the creative music and hopeful sounds of the evening. The bands commented that they rarely receive so much wonderful treatment and hospitality. Kudos to PBF for being a warm, welcoming church that invites the community in," said Jason Caldwell.

Prepare for 40 Days of Solidarity
- Do you want to take The Challenge, change your perspective, and deepen your faith and understanding?
- Are you ready to participate in 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor?
- Do you need to register for a group, get a book, or seek more information?
We are so excited about the adventure we have before us here at PBF. We are gathering in groups to begin a spiritual journey set forth in the book A Place at the Table: 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor. The book was written by Chris Seay, a church planter, author and third-generation Baptist pastor who also wrote Advent Conspiracy.
In Place at the Table, Seay challenges readers to rediscover what Jesus is saying to us regarding the way we live and the way others live. Seay asks readers to eat like the poor for forty days in solidarity with a much-neglected group of people, and to donate the money they save on groceries to a charity. Participants don't go it alone. A Place at the Table includes a short chapter for each of those forty days with scripture, reflections, prayers, encouragement, and tips for engaging the whole family in the process. Learn more about the program here.
Here at PBF, we are about to join this journey of discovery. A journey to listen to God's voice, to pray for the poor, especially the people of the Dominican Republic, and to join together as a body to completely renew our focus on Jesus. Our prayers and funds will be directed toward the charity I Love Baseball, which provides education and food in addition to baseball training. Based in the Dominican Republic, the program stabs at the heart of other sports programs that give children a one-in-a-hundred chance of playing professional sports while robbing them of the chance to receive an education and learn skills to be productive adults.
As a part of this renewal, we are asking that you:
- Join a care group that will study and discuss what God has to say to us regarding the poor and our attitude toward them.
- Begin a 40-day fast where we eat foods that poor people in the Dominican Republic would eat. We begin the fast October 8th. Sundays are feast days. Feel free to eat whatever you would like. Our fast will end on Thanksgiving Eve when we will have a Thanksgiving Eve service followed by a pie social. We will also be taking a special offering at this service for the Dominican Republic.
- Communicate with us on Facebook or our blog while on this journey. We will post recipes, and comment regarding how the journey is going. We are anxious to hear from you all because we know that if we take the time to listen, God will speak to us clearly, both as individuals and as a church.
ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE? REGISTER HERE.
