Students digging and planting
2011 Planting Day volunteers digging in!
NHLT's first planting day was a great success thanks to more than 40 students from Northwest Regional High School No. 7 who volunteered last May. Along with 40+ hardworking adults, they formed planting and fencing teams that dug in 200 native shrubs and trees. Nearly all the plants have flourished so far thanks to so much rain last summer. We may need to start watering soon though due to lack of rain this spring.

Fencing Team Gets Organized
The fencing teams followed the planters.

With the support of a grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the USDA, the Land Trust is working to improve wildlife habitat in the old sand and gravel extraction area (about 12+ acres)on our Alfred Sabolcik property. This includes removing invasive shrubs such as Multiflora rose, Barberry and Autumn Olive, planting native shrubs and trees along the stream, and planting native, warm-season grasses.

NHLT is grateful to the New Hartford Conservation Commission for their help with this project.

Celebrate Earth Day with NHLT several times during the next month!

Please read all the way down for opportunities to take a guided walk, remove invasive shrubs, plant native trees and bushes along a stream, etc.
