REPORT  FROM THE FLYING YANKEE

The goal is to have the Flying Yankee restored to original operating condition and ready to travel the rails for Education and Tourism.

The next step to get the Flying Yankee ready to be put back on its restored trucks features the installation of components, including the under carriage piping for the brake system.  In order to complete this portion, we need to raise $125,000 to $150,000.  If we can meet or exceed this figure it will allow for the undertaking of items including crane service, rigging, couplers, and trackage, as well as brake work.  The flying Yankee Restoration Group, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization.  All funds raised go directly to the restoration as there are no paid employees or office expenses.

Once on the rails, then the focus will be to resolve operational issues that will allow the Flying Yankee to be brought by rail to NH communities for education and promotional purposes.

Following the above portion of the project, we can continue with the propulsion system.  There are several ideas proposed and once the Flying Yankee is out and around, this will be much easier to accomplish.

As the work is done, it is inspected and documented by and for the Department of Transportation in consideration of Amtrak and FRA regulations to allow for future access to the region's rail network.  The Flying Yankee Restoration Group, Inc. continues to work closely with the NHDOT, Bureau of Rail &Transit and the Plymouth and Lincoln Rail Road to bring the Flying Yankee back to operating condition.

LIN-WOOD SCHOOL, LINCOLN, NH

In November of 2011, Shaun Hagan (Social Studies Teacher at Lin-Wood School) brought his 8th Grade Class to the Hobo Railroad to see and experience trains first hand.  They heard from Mike Goodin of the Hobo Railroad regarding trains, their operation, how they are used, etc.  At the same time, the class visited the Flying Yankee and were given a seminar on this particular unit.  Mr. Hagan high lighted trains and their development in the construction of the United States.

Mr. Hagan submitted 4 Essays written by this 8th Grade Class concerning what they had learned and their conception of trains through the year.  Following this newsletter you will receive separate (4) emails containing the students essays.  Hopefully you will find them as interesting as we did.

Your comments would be most welcome.  Each student had their own vision but seemed to grasp the idea.  This exemplifies another reason to have the Flying Yankee available for education.  The Flying Yankee may have been constructed in 1934-35 but it is in direct relation to the High Speed units being constructed today.  It is hard to believe that the Flying Yankee was clocked at 112mph on the rail of that era.
