RAFFLE DRAWING

Jennifer Clark Drawing #2Hobo Depot

While some  Flying Yankee members looked on, Jennifer Clark of the Hobo RR graciously drew the winning raffle ticket for the River Raisin "S" Gauge Flying Yankee model.  The model itself was donated by Mr. Lewis Lloyd and the lucky winner was Mr. Charles Franklin of Manchester, MA.  See following article for further information

RIVER RAISIN "S" GAUGE RAFFLE WINNER

Charles Franklin with S Gauge Model

Mr. Charles Franklin of Manchester, MA was the lucky winner of the Flying Yankee "S" Gauge model raffle held June 11th, 2011 at the Flying Yankee Open House at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH.  Mr. Franklin was quite surprised and very happy to have this model for his own model set up.  He promises to send pictures as soon as he has it set up for us all to see.  Good luck Mr. Franklin and we look forward to seeing the pictures.

JUNE 11 OPEN HOUSE

May 2011 Partially exposed

Thank you to all of you that visited the Flying Yankee Open House June 11.  You all made a very cold day warm and enjoyable.  To those of you looking that had been looking forward to the cover being removed, we apologize for the confusion.  As explained in the previous newsletter, even though the weatherizing is complete and beautifully done, for safety and security reasons, it was decided to leave the cover in place until the Flying Yankee can be put back on its wheels.  Before the Flying Yankee goes back on its wheels, the under carriage wiring and plumbing has to be completed.  In order to have this completed, funds need to be raised.  The weather proofing used up the funds previously received from the State provided from a Federal Grant to NH.  As soon as this new project is completed and the Yankee is back on its wheels, Ben Clark (P&L RR-Hobo RR) will be able to move it around from place to place while the final phase is worked on which will be the power units (1 for "running" the train and a 2nd for power when idle).

Steve Taylor turned on the heat and all was comfortable.  People were delighted to see all the windows in place and sealed, all the doors back in place and shining, and the "hatch" cover back in place.

A SPECIAL FATHER'S DAY GIFT FOR DAD

Matt Pickett (Pickett Design, Cambridge, MA) gave his father, Tom Pickett, a special Father's Day gift and brought him to Lincoln for a special tour of the Flying Yankee - a train he had watched as a youngster, dreamt of going on, but had never been inside.  We enjoyed over 2 hours of investigating the Flying Yankee, listening to different stories, and enjoyed a great afternoon.  Tom, and Matt verified, mentioned that back in the days of "Trolley" travel, you could take a trolley from Portland, ME all the way to Florida. Foster Leavitt in Saco, ME would know more about that being from a family of Trolley men in the Portland, ME area.  Hard to imagine in this day and age isn't it?

Father and son maintain a train set (Tom lives in Weymouth, MA) with a Flying Yankee model as one of the trains.  The Yankee is their favorite and Matt let us in on a little secret - because he likes the look, he has a fourth car on his Yankee model (which he removed for this picture to keep it authentic).  Sounds like a lot of fun guys.  Thank you also Matt for your very generous donation to the continuation of the Flying Yankee Restoration.

Motorcycles, Trains, and like minded friends.  A great way to spend a weekend.  The Hobo Railroad provided rail service between the Weirs and Meredith.  Looks like a full house and then some. A busy but fun weekend for everyone.  These pictures were gratefully provided by Hobo Railroad Engineer, George Kenson.  Thank you George for sharing some of the fun with the rest of us.

"THE SILVER HILL BOYS & THE SECRET RR CLUB"

Silver Hill Boys Book

Looking for that special book for your child to complete their Summer Reading Program for school.  Pick up a copy of "The Silver Hill Boys and the Secret Railroad Club" by Joe Karas.  Parent's and Grandparent's alike will enjoy this true story which will also produce a little nostalgia from sand lot baseball, ice skating on the local pond, to sleding down the steepest hill we could find.  Great story for all ages and Joe provides a portion of each sale toward the restoration of the Flying Yankee.
