Organize Your Life
& Make Room for a Pet
Before you decide to get a pet, you'll want to make sure that you are able to provide them with a happy life. Here are a few things you'll want to consider before making the big decision to bring an animal into your home.
- Do you have other pets? Some animals get along with other creatures better than others. You don't want to get a new pet home and find out that your existing pet cannot make friends with it, or vice versa.
- Do you have the resources? Pets have needs which will require extra monetary funds. Think food, health care, and pet care when you're out of town.
- Do you have the energy? Some pets, especially dogs, require an abundance of effort. They'll need to be taken for walks, played with, and given a bunch of love.
- Does anyone in your home have pet allergies? Allergies to pet dander are pretty common and can cause some serious side effects. Have everyone tested before you bring in a furry friend, especially cats (the most common cause of pet allergies).

Learn-a-Little, Pick-a-Pet
Dogs ~ There are so many different breeds of dogs with different personalities. Make sure you choose the right one for you. They need to be taken out to go to the bathroom several times per day. Cats ~ Cats are naturally dehydrated so provide them with 2 bowls of water in different areas of the house. Litter boxes should be scooped once a day and changed once a month. Fish ~ Store fish food near their bowl or aquarium for easy feeding.
Gerbils ~ Gerbils chew on wood, plastic, and cardboard. They like to eat fresh apple, carrot, broccoli, and cauliflower. Ferrets ~ Ferrets are expensive; to purchase, to feed, to cage, to provide medical treatment for. They sleep 15-18 hours a day and stink a little! Birds ~ Birds are messy. They throw their food outside the cage and might poop on you or your furniture. Clean out their cage (and your house) once a week. Reptiles ~ Reptiles like snakes, geckos, and turtles need a cage. Many of them also require heat sources, lighting, and places to hide in the cage.
