Greetings Chorus Supporters!
The vibrant reds and yellows of the fall foliage mark the passing of summer and the return of cooler temperatures to our state. Our chorus, singing beautiful music in the Chapel Hill area for over 30 years, is also marking a change this fall. We have chosen a new name! Yes, we've dropped a long name that was often shortened to an acronym (Chapel Hill Community Chorus, also known as CHCC) in favor of a single word -VOICES. We will continue to produce excellent music, both classical and modern, and we will continue to support three distinct singing opportunities.
- Voices- the large chorus performing with orchestra in large concert halls
- Cantari, a Voices ensemble (25 singers) performing a cappella repertoire in more intimate venues
- Summer Voices, an eight-week theme-based singing experience for singers of all abilities.
If you haven't heard us in awhile, now is the time to buy your ticket. Something exciting awaits you at every concert! You won't be disappointed. |

The Financial Side of Choral Music
by Cathy Burt, Treasurer 2011-12
During the 2010-11 season,Voices (performing as CHCC) produced five separate concerts including two concerts for the larger 120 member chorus, two Cantari Ensemble concerts, and a Summer Chorus concert. Producing high-quality concerts such as these each year is costly; the Voices budget is over $100,000 annually. Our revenue comes from ticket sales, fundraisers, ad sales, and most importantly donations from our patrons.
In an effort to create transparency and encourage continued financial support from our members and friends, the Voices Board of Directors would like to share more detailed information about our chorus finances. Figure 1 below shows our sources of expense by major categories.
 | |
Figure 1 - Voices Expenses |
The concert expense category--which includes the orchestra, soloists, programs, publicity, and use of concert venues--represents over one-third of the total expenditures. Contracts with our director and accompanist represent 27%, and cost of music, black folders, and the production of concert CDs represents another 17% of total expenditures.
Administrative overhead (13%) includes rehearsal space rental, accounting and bookkeeping fees, PayPal fees, insurance, website maintenance, and our social activities, such as our wonderful 30th anniversary reception last May. Only 8% of our budget was spent on fundraising activities--which include the pecan sales, Spring raffle, and the silent auction.

Figure 2 - Voices Revenue |
Figure 2 above shows the chorus revenue in major categories. Ticket sales and performance fees account for about 25% of the revenue. Membership dues (17%) and fees for the music and concert CDs (10%) together account for about one-quarter of our revenue while sales of advertisement space in our concert program represent 11%. Sales from pecans, raffle tickets, and silent auction generated 11% of revenue.
Chorus members work very hard to coordinate these fundraising activities and to find folks who benefit from the goods and services we offer. We are thankful for the many people who donated time, talent, and/or funds to CHCC last year. Their efforts provided over one-quarter of our needed revenue. Much of it came from individual donations from chorus members and friends, including contributions from the CHCC awareness event held at the Siena Hotel last March.
Over $3,000 of total contributions came from a Strowd Roses Grant for Cantari.
As we move into the 2011-12 season, we look forward to continuing to bringing the community quality choral music. Some of our goals include expanding our pool of individual contributors and adding to area businesses that would like to advertise to our patrons. We hope to see you at our concerts this December. |
