| Strowd Roses Grant Awarded to Cantari |
CHCC is proud to announce that its chamber ensemble, Cantari, was awarded $3,000 by Chapel Hill's Strowd Roses Foundation. Cantari will use the funds to support its outreach to senior citizens in the Chapel Hill area.
Cantari has already established relationships with local retirement communities such as Carol Woods and Carolina Meadows by presenting private concerts for their residents. With the funds awarded by Strowd Roses, Cantari can produce materials to reach a wider audience of seniors and provide tickets for seniors who cannot afford the price of admission to a Cantari concert.
Thanks to Strowd Roses, Cantari and CHCC will be able to bring excellent choral music to more senior citizens in Chapel Hill. |

Upcoming Cantari Concert: Through the Eyes of a Poet
O that the learned poets might celebrate the marriage of words and music! From the lyricism of William Shakespeare in love to the witticism of Ogden Nash toasting the animal kingdom, Cantari will delight your ears and tickle your funny bone.
A note on Benjamin Britten's Hym to St. Cecilia:
The patron saint of music, St. Cecilia, has long enjoyed the attention of English composers. There are odes, cantatas , and songs by composers such as John Dryden, Henry Purcell, Hubert Parry, George Frideric Handel, and Herbert Howells.
Benjamin Britten was no exception. In fact, he was born on St. Cecilia's day, November 22. In 1940, Britten turned to W.H. Auden to provide an English text for his Hymn to St. Cecelia and the music composition began to take shape later in that same year. The poem appears in three sections, each followed by a refrain "Blessed Cecilia, appear in visions to all musicians, appear and inspire..." Britten's music is scored for unaccompanied five-part chorus.
