When you are driving toward a specific location, you need directions to get you there in a timely and efficient manner. That's the role of our strategic planning process. Strategic planning is an effort to produce decisions and actions that shape the nature and direction of an organization.

Every few years the Lake County Board of Health and leadership staff come together to develop a new strategic plan. The current plan, developed in 2010, ends this year.

It is exciting to see how our staff has moved forward to launch programs and initiatives to meet  the goals of prevention, collaboration and access.

Public health officials recommend that everyone six months of age and older be vaccinated against influenza, especially pregnant women, young children, people 65 years of age and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.

The Health Department is just one place to receive a vaccine against influenza. Call (847) 377-8470 to check for vaccine availability and to make an appointment.

Protecting Yourself Against West Nile

With the kids back in school, it feels like summer is over, but  there are plenty of post-Labor Day opportunities for you to come in contact with mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. Here are ways to protect yourself.

Accidental falls are a leading cause of fatal injuries among people age 65 and older, and the most common cause of non-fatal hospital admissions due to injury.

Following the lead of the National Council on Aging which sponsors a Falls Awareness Day annually on the first day of fall, the Lake County Health Department is working with the Senior Services Coalition of Lake County and the Lake County Falls Prevention Task Force to raise awareness with falls prevention messages during the fall months of September, October and November.
