To many Midwesterners, February is just another chilly month to endure until spring. But there is another side to February -- it is American Heart Month. I see it as an ideal time to focus on one's health, especially heart health. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in this country; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke. But the right choices can significantly reduce your risk of illness. Here are some tips to stay in good health not only in February but throughout the year:

Use of salt for road and sidewalk maintenance in winter has increased significantly over the years and it is affecting our lakes and even drinking water wells. The chloride in road salt does not go away. One teaspoon of salt can contaminate five gallons of water.

Immunization Clinics to Consolidate
In an effort to improve customer service and operate more efficiently, a consolidation of immunization clinics is occurring, effective April 1. The five monthly satellite walk-in clinics for child immunizations in Lake Zurich, Antioch, Lake Forest, Libertyville and Wauconda will end while hours are expanded at the main appointment-only clinic for immunizations at the Belvidere Medical Building campus in Waukegan.
