| The Running of the Silver Rose 2010 |
Greetings!
The annual "Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run" is nearly upon us! The Rose will enter Oklahoma on November 3, and exit the state into Texas on November 28. It will end its journey at the Basilica in Monterrey, MX on December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This year, we will once again be in Laredo, TX, for the transfer of the Rose from the US to Mexico. This is the only time that the International Bridge is closed to traffic. Are you interested in participating in this wonderful, inspiring and uplifiting event? The dates for this year's trip are December 9-13, 2010. We will be traveling from Oklahoma City to Laredo, TX, with overnight stops in San Antonio and Austin. Deluxe transportation, accommodations, most meals, and all excursions are included in the trip pricing! While the trip is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assemblies in Oklahoma and Texas, one need not be a member of the Knights of Columbus to participate. We had a simply wonderful time during last year's event. Please join us this year! Read on for details father down the page.
History of the Silver Rose
The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program began in 1960 as a project of the Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Squires circles, councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the program by beginning the "Running of the Rose" from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Ontario. Currently, the program is expanding with a rose making its way from Canada to Mexico through the United States each year. See History of the Silver Rose for more information.
The 2010-2011 Silver Rose Run has grown to incorporate more than double the number of jurisdictions participating. Starting in May, three roses began to travel simultaneously through 31 jurisdictions and Mexico.
In recent years the rose has been run from London, Ontario, through 10 states in the United States, and then crossing at the International Bridge into Monterrey, Mexico. During this year, there will be three roses traveling simultaneously starting in London, Ontario, and then moving to the west coast, central United States and the east coast. All three roses will meet at the same time in Texas to travel over the International Bridge and be handed over to Knights from Monterrey. You can be part of this!
"The 'Running of the Rose' is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus," said Supreme Knight Anderson. "Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order's dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of 'One Life, One Rose,' it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made know her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses."

We'll Tour the Five Missions of San Antonio!

Mission San Antonio de Valero a.k.a. "the Alamo"
Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. Construction began on the present site in 1724. In 1793, Spanish officials secularized San Antonio's five missions and distributed their lands to remaining Indian residents. These men and women continued to farm the fields, once the mission's but now their own, and participated in the growing community of San Antonio.

Mission Espada .
San Francisco de la Espada. The southern most of the San Antonio chain of missions, Espada appears as far back in the woods today as it did in the mid-1700s. Founded in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas, this was the first mission in Texas. In 1731, the mission transferred to the San Antonio River area and renamed Mission San Francisco de la Espada.. |

Mission Concepcion

The church at Mission Concepción looks just about as it did, more than 200 years ago. Founded in what is now eastern Texas in 1716. It was transferred to its present in 1731. The beautiful stone church was completed in 1755.

Mission San Juan

San Juan Capistrano made its home along the banks of the San Antonio River in 1731. San Juan was a self-sustaining community that had established a trade network stretching east to Louisiana and south to Coahuila, Mexico.
