Rev. Jim Goin To Lead Pilgrimage to Italy!
It's exciting! It's official! Father James Goin (Holy Name parish in Chickasha, Oklahoma) will lead a pilgrimage from Oklahoma to Italy April 12-22, 2010. Highlights include viewing the Shroud of Turin in Torino, da Vinci's Last Supper, and other marvels as the travellers visit Milan, Torino, Assisi, Siena, Florence, and Rome.
About the Shroud:
The Shroud of Turin will be on display for only five weeks in April and May of this year. The Shroud has long been believed by many through the centuries to have been Christ's burial cloth. It has been displayed only five times in the 20th century Last shown to the public in 2000, the next display was scheduled for 2025 by Pope John Paul II. However, Pope Benedict XVI recently announced that the Shroud will be displayed from April 10 - May 23, 2010, the longest period in its history.
The Chapel of the Shroud, in Turin Cathedral, houses the cloth in a locked silver casket within an iron box inside a marble case. It contains two images: a front and a back side of a man, as though the shroud was first wrapped underneath the body, then over his head and down to his feet. The man is thin, bearded, 5 feet 7 inches tall, and appears to suffer from wounds consistent with crucifixion. The Church has never officially ruled on The Shroud's authenticity, saying judgments about its age and origin belong to the scientific investigation.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Draws Record Crowds
According to an article in Zenit, a new attendance record for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12) in Mexico City was set when more than 6.1 million pilgrims visited the Shrine on Friday and Saturday alone!. Now, I can't even imagine what the numbers were at the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico, those same days, but to us it sure seemed at least a million people were all assembled within a two-square mile area around the Basilica.
Patrons jostled each other for prime spots at their choice of food, artisanias, and souvenir shops. Matachines, traditional Mexican dancers, shook their rattles, twirled and stomped to a throbbing drumbeat wearing traditional pre-Colonial-Era costumes. Enormous flower displays, banners, votive candles too numerous to count, and hundreds of pilgrims approaching the Basilica on their knees deeply touched and humbled us who were privileged to witness such deep devotion and reverence for Our Lady.
Pilgrims came from all across the Americas. Drving home the point, there were 39 of us from Oklahoma and Texas, and while we attempted to weave our way out of the crowd after Mass, we found ourselves rubbing shoulders with a fellow Oklahoma City metro area resident! Small world, it surely is.
Save the Date: Pilgrimage to Monterrey Dec. 8 - 14, 2010
