Voices of CHS

Before I started classes at CHS I was a bit worried about how professional it was all going to be, but since the institution was one of a kind, I figured I might as well give it a chance.

I'm so glad I did! I have met wonderful people who share the same passion for a high-quality education and ministerial work. The academics have been every bit as challenging as they were in the brick-and-mortar graduate school I have attended, and the professors have been just as demanding of high standards, available for private discussions and extra help, and the classmates have been terrific!

The only problem with the class selections is that it's impossible to take all the classes that seem interesting in any given semester; the subjects offer a good balance of practical courses such as counseling and finances of starting a small business.

The professors all find a way to tie in Pagan themes to even the most practical coursework to provide a comprehensive education, and they do a wonderful job not tying the curriculum down to any one strand of Paganism. They guide the discussions in such a way that even if no two students in the class share the same path, all of them can gain a deeper understanding of their own traditions.

And, of course, the projects bring us out into the community, through writing articles, meeting with local groups, volunteer work, and much more.

I can't say enough good things about CHS!

Marguerite Rigoglioso, Ph.D., turned several of her graduate papers into published articles and transformed her doctoral dissertation into two plus books. The first is the groundbreaking volume The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece (Palgrave Macmillan 2009), which reveals the existence of an entire network of priestesses dedicated to miraculous conception in Mediterranean antiquity. The second, Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity (Palgrave Macmillan 2010), is a pioneering book that offers a unique feminist view of the oldest cults to Graeco-Roman goddesses as well as a stunning new interpretation of the Eleusinian Mysteries and Thesmophoria dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. A third book is in progress.

Dr. Rigoglioso worked a chapter of her master's thesis into an article published in the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion on the cult to Demeter and Persephone at Lake Pergusa in Sicily, which was given an honorable mention for the journal's New Scholar Award. Her academic articles have also appeared in the anthologies Societies of Peace and She Is Everywhere!, as well as Feminist Theology, Trivia, The Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature, and other publications. She is the editor of Where to Publish Articles on Women's Studies, Feminist Religious Studies, and Feminist/Womanist Topics.
