The Pagan world is growing and changing! As our numbers grow, so does our desire and need for training and education.

Are you --

A community leader?
Curious about a particular topic?
Ready for scholarship?
Called to chaplaincy?
A natural for pastoral counseling?
Needing an MDiv for your career choice?
Eager to update your knowledge and skills?

Then you'll find what you are looking for at CHS.

Here are answers to a few questions you may have:

All Foundations 4-week classes are always open to the public

You don't need to be pursuing a certificate in order to enjoy a CHS class

We know you have great potential; now that our master's degrees are open, only they and the Certificate of Professional Development require a bachelor's degree to apply.  If you feel driven to excellence, don't wait to get started

Of course, anyone may take a master's class!  Keep in mind that you only earn credit hours towards a degree if you have been admitted to a degree program, and you will earn unit hours towards a certificate if you are pursuing one.  If you've not applied for a degree or certificate program we do require you to write the instructor for permission

On occasion classes may fill up, in which case, our master's students are given priority

There's something for just about everyone now at Cherry Hill Seminary, not just graduate students.  We hope to see you in class soon!

Tuition Rates

Cherry Hill Seminary has weathered the economic downturn for the past year and a half, but this spring we realized that we had to be realistic about staying viable and strong.

For that reason you will see an increase in tuition for Fall 2010 (as announced in April).

New rates are $145 per credit hour for master's courses, $80 per credit hour for PCE courses, and a flat $95 for Foundations (no more per semester fee for non-matriculated students).

Legacy rates increase proportionally as noted in the student handbook; if you have lost your legacy registration link, email us for help.

Early registration discount is still good until August 6.  After that, the new rates will apply.
When You're Ready For Something More

The Poetry & Politics of Nature
Highland Headshot

Join one of our newest faculty members, Chris Highland, MDiv, in a "saunter with John Muir and Walt Whitman."

Drawing from both the "reverent activist" prose of Muir and the "earthy universalist" poetry of Whitman, this course will trek the wilderness of radical ideas from Muir's preservation of National Parks to Whitman's celebration of humanity even in the midst of the Civil War. We will unfold new maps for thinking about the environment as the class explores the gritty edges of human society (from the 19th Century to the present) through a delightful sauntering into The Wilds of which humans are only a part. We will uncover pragmatic options for a contemporary, creative interface with both the poetic and political dimensions of the natural cosmos.

You've asked (in our recent survey) for more flexible class times, so "Nature" has no set time, but students and teacher will arrange periodic conferences by mutual agreement.  Prepare to be surprised and inspired!
Call of The Dark Mother

In 1997 Macha NightMare co-created, with Starhawk, The Pagan Book of Living and Dying: Practical Rituals, Prayers, Blessings, and Meditations on Crossing Over, which formed the foundation of death and dying workshops Macha has presented throughout the country.  Macha has served on the Advisory Board of the Sacred Dying Foundation since 1997.  In 2004 reviewers for PanGaia Magazine voted The Pagan Book of Living and Dying the Number One book for advanced Pagans.

Realizing the importance of this ministry, Macha designed the "Call of the Dark Mother" class for CHS around 2002.  Consistently one of our most popular courses, CODM has run nearly every fall since.  Whatever your role in your community, you will stand at this sacred gate one day, and some will be called to assist others and their families as they pass over.

Taught in recent years by longtime CHS instructor, Jennifer Bennett, who trained with Macha to present this special experience, CODM ranges from the practical matters of end of life directives and burial arrangements, to the nuances of accompanying the dying on their journey, memorial services, and supporting families and friends.  This could be one of the most important courses you ever take, at CHS or anywhere.
Western Initiation

winslade
From the early days of Renaissance Hermeticism to Masonic rites, through to Gardnerian Witchcraft and contemporary manifestations of the initiation paradigm, Western Initiation: Theories and Issues will explore the important issues inherent to initiation rites, including notions of power, performance, mystery, and symbolism, as well as
the role initiation rites play in the life of the community and the individual.

Scholar Jason Winslade, Ph.D., has studied the Western Mystery Traditions as both an academic and initiated practitioner since 1992. His PhD is in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, where his research focused on occult initiation and performance theory.

Jason has taught courses at several universities on esotericism, rites of passage, mythology, folklore, occultism in media and popular culture, comic books, performance of literature, gender studies, and writing. He has presented and published on these topics for several journals and anthologies, including a chapter on Pagan festivals and fire circles for Brill's Handbook of Contemporary Paganism. He is also an active fire drummer and musician, performing most recently as a member of the festival band, Faebotica.
