April 2010
From The Director

New to Cherry Hill Seminary?
Or have you toyed with the idea of taking classes?  This summer couldn't be a better time to dip your toes in the water.
Here are answers to a few questions you may have:

All Foundations 4-week classes are always open to the public
You don't need to be pursuing a certificate in order to enjoy a CHS class
We know you have great potential; now that our master's degrees are open, only they and the Certificate of Professional Development require a bachelor's degree to apply.  If you feel driven to excellence, don't wait to get started
Of course, anyone may take a master's class!  Keep in mind that you only earn credit hours towards a degree if you have been admitted to a degree program, and you will earn unit hours towards a certificate if you are pursuing one.  If you've not applied for a degree or certificate program we do require you to write the instructor for permission
On occasion classes may fill up, in which case, our master's students are given priority

There's something for just about everyone now at Cherry Hill Seminary, not just graduate students.  We hope to see you in class soon!

Tuition Rates
Cherry Hill Seminary has weathered the economic downturn for the past year and a half, but this spring we realized that we had to be realistic about staying viable and strong.

For that reason you will see an increase in tuition for Fall 2010.  New rates will be $145 per credit hour for master's courses, $80 per credit hour for PCELL courses, and a flat $90 for Foundations (plus an unchanged per semester fee for non-matriculated students of $25, for any number of courses in that semester).

We will also return the early registration discount in the Fall.

Legacy students' rates will rise proportionally, and we'll contact you with that information.

Announcing Summer Semester!

  • Summer Academic Intensive: Changing Roles - Dual Roles
Have you ever served as 'pastoral counselor' to a close friend?  Priestessed the dying of a beloved family member?  Mediated between two feuding neighbors?

How did you distinguish between your role in that situation and the other roles you might have with the same people at other times?  Where are the necessary boundaries?

This summer's Academic Intensive will focus on managing (or juggling) the many roles required of those who serve as clergy, counselors, chaplains, or leadership in small and large spiritual groups.

Gathering:  June 24-27 in a beautiful location in Western Massachusetts.  This is a chance to meet some of your classmates and instructors face to face; a chance to work together with more than just words.

Duration:  Class will run on the website June 1 through July 20; homework and discussion are required both before and after our in-person gathering.  Students can expect 25 hours of work before and after the gathering and about 20 hours of work face to face for a total of 45 hours and 1 credit hour.

    Prerequisite:
Ethics and Boundaries in Fall 08 or later

    Financial Aid at Cherry Hill
MaggieCherry Hill Seminary is a fairly young institution in its eleventh year of existence. After a ten-year history of offering high-quality education leading to a certificate of completion, we have recently offered admission to our first-ever degree programs beginning with the Fall Semester of 2009.

We are often asked about student financial aid.  As such a young institution, we just can't offer scholarship money yet. We don't yet qualify for public funding or government-supported tuition loans. We're probably three to five years from qualifying for accreditation, which would be a first step toward financial eligibility.

Since we have neither a bricks-and-mortar physical campus nor accreditation, we are not eligible for Department Of Defense or Veterans Affairs tuition payments at this time. We do anticipate that our Master of Divinity degree will be an acceptable credential for a successful military chaplaincy candidate; under DOD rules we won't know that for sure until after our first graduate is accepted by DOD - still several years away.

That said, though, I should point out that our tuition rates are among the lowest available for graduate degrees -- and even lower for courses offered at a non-degreed certificate level through the PCELL program (that's Pagan Community Education for Lifelong Learning), or the Foundations series. Most of our students are adults with complex lives, many taking just one course at a time. So even though we're not able to offer financial aid, our programs are affordable to students of diverse financial backgrounds.
