April 2011

This is all about Piano Slam - piano, poetry, dance and DJ.

Details are below, but let me share with you the following: it started three years ago as part of Dranoff's mission to bring our music to audiences that would otherwise never have a chance to experience world class music. Then, 4 public middle and high schools got involved in the poetry competition that is the core of this project; this time, students from 61 schools contributed their works.

Then, we worked with the student poets, pianists, spoken word artists and DJ; now we have broadened the program to include dance.  Now, an award winning director is creating the show.

I really want you to understand that this is not a" high school play"; it

will be original, dynamic, exciting, touching and authentic.  Please come and see for yourselves; bring your friends as well.  The tickets to the show are free, but required.

Better still, to help the Dranoff, purchase VIP tickets for the party afterwards at Bin 18 just north of the Arsht Center.

There are so many supporters who have made it possible for us to bring Piano Slam back to the community.  I want to thank each person and each organization that has believed in this and I hope that we can all look forward to a Volume 4!

PIANOSLAMPIANO SLAM Volume 3

Many kids live in a world where they have no voice.  The mission of Piano Slam is to utilize music as a tool and inspiration to give our youth a voice through artistic expression.

Piano Slam is so called, by the way, because a poetry competition is referred to as a Poetry Slam. We hope you will not only come yourselves,  but bring your friends to support this.  Here is why:

This, our third Piano Slam, will involve a number of new elements and people to widen the appeal and the sustain the impact of the experience for the students.

Marcel Bergmann is the composer of this year's focal music. He and Elizabeth Bergmann  were Dranoff competition winners in 1993.  They have recorded their performance of Urban Pulse.

The stage show is directed by Teo Castellanos. It will feature not only the Duo Stephanie & Saar, the poet Adrian Castro and the DJ Brimstone 127, but also the  dancers of the Thomas Armor Youth Ballet.

The music features selections of mostly American composers, played and juxtaposed in a dialogue  with some of the great hip hop pieces so associated with urban life.

And, of course, the 16 winning poets of the Miami Dade middle and high school system.  Plus the winner of last year's high school poems, Brianna Hartfield, will emcee.
