What a month this has been!
Dranoff Bronze Medal winners Svetlana Smolina and Maxim Mogilevsky had a commitment on Florida's West Coast - Svetlana participated in the Chopin Project in Sarasota - and offered to our friends and supporters a concert in Miami. Steinway is hosting them on November 19th with a mostly Russian program which promises to be gorgeous. Further, Steinway will offer a private sale of select pianos, available only to concert goers and registered Steinway customers. It will benefit the Dranoff. Please contact Steinway of Coral Gables! A heartfelt thank you! The concert of Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia with the New World Percussion Consort was spectacular, although too outre for some.
Dacra invited us to do our contemporary concert in The Atrium in the Design District concert. Duo Seo & Kato and the Bergonzi String Quartet offered a program that showcased 6 entirely different composers from 5 different countries: German Zimmerman, Italian Berio, French Ravel, Americans Moross and Bernstein, and Estonian Part. It really was a tribute to the synthesizing power of music. Added into the mix was the generous support of the restaurant Fratelli Lyon for offering a special dinner for concertgoers and for sponsoring the reception afterwards. It was a fantastic evening.
Duo Hesse and Pauna were scheduled to play as part of the German Weltklassik Goes Grand Piano series on Key Biscayne. Unfortunately, their concert was cancelled due to illness. We hope to see them back in Miami in the Spring. Gabriele Fiorentino

THE PERCUSSION CONCERT

"At first, a long part of the learning felt very disjunct -- nothing attached to me right away, and I felt that the over 40 musical fragments on my score were unrelated to each other. They seemed more like 'licks' than coherent musical ideas. When Stephanie and I started to put Archipel together, played off of each other's ideas, the piece started to make sense. Adding the percussion (the final ingredient) made the piece fall right into place because Archipel is essentially about COMMUNICATION -- communication of ideas, techniques, creative impulses. The energy and musicality of four trained musicians communicating to one another freely and on the spot. At the concert, Archipel became rich, colorful, vibrant and alive". Saar Ahuvia

DESIGN DISTRICT CONCERT
Before Duo Kuni Seo & Shinichiro Kato played in The Atrium for the evening concert, they did what so many visiting Dranoff Duos do - they brought their music and art to a student body. In this case, the students were those of the neighboring Design and Architecture High School, a Dade County Magnet School. Here is Shinichiro's observation: "We were so pleased to notice that the students really appreciated Bernd Zimmermann's "Perspektiven I", one of the most modern, complicated works for two pianos. Young people have no fear of new music. There are no preconceived notions! The Atrium is a beautiful spot, set up with two grand pianos underneath trees. It felt as though we were playing al fresco. Perfect for the quiet, contemplative "Wasserklavier" by Luciano Berios, which is played sempre una corda, without expression.
It was an honor to play the Moross Sonata with the Bergonzi String Quartet. It is a very special piece for piano duet, and it was a joy and great experience to play with those artists.
Finally, to be able to play Bernstein's "West Side Story" in his home country made us very happy indeed. Thank you for the generous applause!"
