He is the
iconoclastic and innovative performer, hip-hop theatrical artist, theater
director, and educator who has interpreted the works of Shakespeare,
Shaw, Langston Hughes, Frederick Douglas, Laurence Holder, August Wilson, Charles Fuller et al. at some of the country's
greatest theaters. He recently co-adapted and
performed Langston Hughes' Simple Tales for the world premiere of the Jesse B.
Simple Suite for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis
which debuted new music by trombonist Vincent Gardner. His cinematic poemedy - A Poet's Pilgrimage - about a young poet's decision to abandon the law

The Brass King
|
The Brass King is the man behind the wheels of steel who takes you back to the essence of Live Funk, Neo-Soul, Jazz, House, R&B, Old Soul and Hip Hop in a unique blend of beats, melodies and rhythms. Bekay has been blasting his sound for the past 15 years in some of the hottest spots in the country.
He was part of Piano Slam, Vol 1 in 2009.

Deborah Magdalena
|
Like Bekay, Deborah was part of Piano Slam, Vol 1 in 2009, both behind the scenes and on stage. The collaboration with the Duo Van Veen and spoken-word artist Mekka aka Grimo in terms of the music and programming, and with the students in the context of coaching them has prepared her well to be the producer of this year's Vol 2 - with twice as many students!
There are others who have been indispensable in making this project happen. I plan to give them their due in the May newsletter.

Jeroen Van Veen
|
Jeroen was very much part of Piano Slam, Vol 1 last year both on the production and the performance side. He played together with his brother Maarten as the piano duo Van Veen. The duo were winners in the 4th Dranoff International Two Piano Competition in 1995. They founded the international Piano Quartet in 1998 and have been touring the United States most every year. The brothers are acclaimed as one of the most innovative and powerful piano duos of today.
This year, Jeroen is here sans Maarten. He is the Man Behind The Scenes.
