AARP Funds Process to Improve South End Intersection

Neighborhood planning process underway at "Five Corners" site

  5 way group

A neighborhood-based group with hopes to improve access, safety and appearance at a busy Burlington intersection was selected in August to receive a Community Action Sponsorship from AARP Vermont.  The focus of the planning initiative is the intersection in Burlington's South End where five streets converge (at the corner of Howard and St. Paul Sts.). The group has already convened at the site and has begun discussions of how the area could be improved.

The $2,000 award is helping the grassroots organization hire a facilitator, organize neighborhood meetings and ultimately develop a work plan for agreed-upon improvements. Resident Scott Mapes submitted the application and is playing a key leadership role along with a group of neighbors as the process plays out over the next several months.

"This proposal presents a unique opportunity for AARP to be a catalyst for change which will be driven by active and motivated members of a particular neighborhood," said Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur of AARP Vermont.  "Our support has helped jump start a community development process that we hope will lead to some meaningful improvements in this very busy intersection that sits in the heart of a residential neighborhood. These sponsorships are intended to inspire and support grassroots groups that have a vision for their neighborhood or the city and how it can be improved. This project is an excellent example of what we hope to encourage."

AARP Vermont launched the Community Action Sponsorship Program in 2010 as a way to provide modest grant funds and technical support to community groups whose missions were consistent with those of the Burlington Livable Community Project. This citywide collaborative project seeks to prepare Burlington for the rapidly aging demographic shift - particularly in the areas of housing, mobility and community engagement.

As the "Five Corners Group" develops plans and identifies action steps, they will be reported in BLCP Connections.

Voices of Older Residents Needed for Plan BTV

The City's Planning and Zoning Department has completed the first phase of its work to draft a comprehensive Downtown and Waterfront Plan that will set the stage for how our city develops over the coming years. Several reports documenting current conditions in the study area are available to the public and set the stage for an intensive public engagement process that will kick off in January. All residents of Burlington are invited to weigh-in during a weeklong design charrette, January 24-30, led by project consultant Town Planning and Urban Design Collaborative. A design charrette is a week-long intense, participatory process where all members of the community work directly with a multidisciplinary design team, including town planners, architects and engineers to define a collective vision for the future and create the final plan for the downtown and waterfront. The entire process is open to the public at all times. The week will start with an opening presentation January 24th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Contois Auditorium in City Hall. A design studio will be open for walk-ins all week from 9 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. at 1 Church Street.

Volunteer Spotlight

ROAD TO RECOVERY DRIVERS NEEDED - United Way of Chittenden County Volunteer Connection is looking for volunteers age 55 plus who can be a hero to a cancer patient. The ROAD TO RECOVERY program needs volunteer drivers to transport cancer patients to their life-saving treatment. Patients often live in remote areas in Vermont away from convenient public transportation or may be too ill to drive themselves. These treatments are given daily on an outpatient basis and can last for weeks.

Driver Requirements: All drivers volunteer their time and the use of their car to drive patients to treatment. Drivers may contribute as little as one morning/afternoon a month to as many days as they wish.

All drivers must have a valid driver's license, a safe driving record, the state's minimum required liability insurance and be at least 18 years old.

Contact Nancy at 860-1677 or by email: nancy@unitedwaycc.org.

You can find many other volunteer opportunities at the United Way of Chittenden County Volunteer Connection's online searchable database: www.unitedwaycc.org and click on "Volunteer".
