Illinois Tollway Activates Zero Weather Patrols

The Illinois Tollway recently launched its Zero Weather Road Patrols to assist drivers stranded in their cars during the first deep freeze of the 2010-2011 winter season.  The Zero Weather Road Patrols are implemented when temperatures and/or wind chills drop below zero.

The 24-hour service dedicates hourly patrols in search of motorists stranded in disabled vehicles or in response to calls that come in to *999 motorist assistance, Illinois Tollway dispatch or Illinois State Police District 15.

Cars or trucks with empty fuel tanks, flat tires, overheated radiators or mechanical problems are just some of the most frequent problems reported among the motorists needing help.

The Zero Weather Road Patrols consist of crew cab trucks equipped with arrow boards for directing traffic around accidents or stranded vehicles and enough room to accommodate up to five passengers if motorists need to be transported to a Tollway maintenance garage, toll plaza or Tollway oasis while service is obtained.

Winter Weather Travel Tips

The Tollway offers the following travel tips to keep safe during extreme temperatures:

  • Stranded motorists should turn on their emergency lights and remain in their vehicles until help arrives.
  • Cell phone users should call *999 motorist assistance for roadway assistance or to report other motorists pulled over on the side of the road.
  • Before calling, try to note the nearest milepost marker - a green and white sign that displays a number, direction of travel and route designation shield - so the stranded motorist can be quickly located.
New Laws Taking Effect on January 1, 2011

These are just a few of the changes to Illinois law that will go into effect on January 1, 2011.  I will update you on any other important changes as I am made aware of them.

Employers Can No Longer Use Credit History in Hiring Decisions

The Employee Credit Privacy Act prohibits most Illinois employers from inquiring about an applicant's or employee's credit history or using an individual's credit history as a basis for an employment decision.

The Act does not prohibit an employer from checking the credit history of an employee if "a satisfactory credit history is an established bona fide occupational requirement of a particular position."  That condition is met only if at least one of the following circumstances is present:

  • State or federal law requires bonding covering the employee
  • The employee has unsupervised access to more than $2,500
  • The employee has signatory power over business assets greater than $100 or more per transaction
  • The employee is a manager who sets the direction or control of the business
  • The employee has access to personal, confidential, financial, trade secrets or state or national security information
Contribution Limits and Other Reforms to Campaign Finance Law

This year there are several changes to the Illinois Disclosure law. One of the most noteworthy of these changes is the imposition of contribution limits for the first time in Illinois.  For more information on the changes, please click here.

New Law on Residential Solar Panels

Under the Homeowners' Solar Energy Act, homeowners now have the right to construct solar panels on their homes as long as they follow certain federal guidelines.  Additionally, homeowner's associations cannot prohibit solar panel installation because of aesthetic reasons.
