New Dental Discount Card

Lake County Announces New Dental Discount
Card Program for Lake County Residents

A new dental discount card program is now available that will help Lake County residents save money on their dental service expenses. The NACo Dental Discount Card Program, provided by the National Association of Counties (NACo) in partnership with Careington International Corporation, can help Lake County residents save up to 50 percent on their dental care services, and 20 percent on orthodontic services.

Individuals or families may opt to pay for a monthly or yearly membership. The cost for a yearly individual membership is $59 and $69 for families.

More than 200 providers in Lake County are participating in this program. Discount card holders will receive significant savings from these providers on dental cleanings, x-rays, braces, dentures, crowns, root canals and more. This plan is not insurance.

Cardholders can simply schedule an appointment with a participating dentist or specialist and present their card to receive a discount at the time of service. There are no forms to complete and everyone in the household is eligible to receive a discount with a family membership.

The NACo Dental Discount Card Program is designed to complement health insurance plans or work in conjunction with health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts and health reimbursement arrangements.

To sign up for the Dental Discount Card Program, residents can download a registration form at: www.nacodentalprogram.com.  A list of participating providers and more information is available.

New Permitting Fees & Registration

Permitting Registrations

In the effort to simplify the permitting process while maintaining safety for our residential customers, as of December 1, several residential improvements may require only a registration with the office rather than a full permit, if certain conditions are met.

These improvements include: residential sheds and other storage structures with a floor area of 100 sq. ft. or less; re-roofs (not involving structural work) performed by Illinois licensed roofers to existing residential structures; re-siding of existing residential structures; re-siding of existing residential structures; and fence installation on perimeters of parcels zoned or used for residential purposes and not located at street intersections. Instead of paying a building permit fee, the applicant will pay a $25 registration fee.

Visit www.lakecountyil.gov/planning or call the Central Permit Facility for more information at 847-377-2600.

New Fee Schedule

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010 the County updated the Land Development Fee Schedule. Visit www.lakecountyil.gov/planning or call the Central Permit Facility for more information at 847-377-2600. The fee schedule goes into effect December 1, 2010. Complete applications received before then will be reviewed under the current fee schedule.

Senior Property Tax Deferral

The 2010 tax year Senior Deferral registration begins in January.

Illinois residents who are at least 65 years of age (as of June 1), who have resided in Illinois for at least three years and have a total household income of $50,000 or less, can apply for the state loan that charges 6% simple interest per year.

  • Must be primary residence
  • Loan must be paid back at the time of sale, if refinanced, or one year from the date of death
  • If a mortgage company is involved, the mortgage company must sign off
  • Total taxes plus interest can not exceed 80% of the value of the home
  • Those that have a current mortgage, 2nd mortgage or reverse mortgage must check with their lending institution to see if you qualify

Tax Sales Begin Monday, November 29

This year's tax sale occurs on Monday and Tuesday, November 29-30 at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road. Both days start at 9:00 a.m.; Monday will go until 5:00 p.m., Tuesday until all taxes are sold.

By state law, any taxes that remain unpaid go to a tax sale toward the end of the year. This means that registered tax buyers bid to pay the tax balance and receive an unrecorded lien on the property. The longer that lien goes unpaid, the more penalties get added, and eventually the tax buyer has the option of petitioning the Circuit Court for the deed to the property.

In order to avoid having your taxes sold, they must be paid in full by Wednesday, November 24 in the County Treasurer's Office.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Grants

LIHEAP Grants Program Opens
for ALL Eligible Customers

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas are strongly encouraging all of our customers who meet the specified requirements to apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funds now. The program provides grants to help customers struggling financially to pay their energy bills. Customers who have lost their job or have had their hours reduced, may have a very good chance of qualifying for a LIHEAP grant.

The grants are available to help customers pay outstanding bills, reconnect natural gas service and maintain their home's service. The utilities are sending out postcards to customers who may be eligible to receive LIHEAP funding to encourage them to apply. Customers may be eligible for a grant if their income is 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines according to the following chart:

Family Income Guidelines

Size of Family

30 Days Income

1

$1,354

2

$1,821

3

$2,289

4

$2,756

5

$3,224

To apply for LIHEAP, customers must have proof of household income for the last 30 days, a copy of their current utility bill and Social Security numbers for everyone in the household. During the 2009-2010 heating season, approximately 50,000 customers took advantage of LIHEAP assistance.

To find the location of the closest LIHEAP application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA's hotline at 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit http://www.cedaorg.net. North Shore Gas customers can call the Community Action Partnership of Lake County at 1-847-249-4330. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com or www.northshoregasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines.

The utilities are also encouraging customers to take advantage of various other programs and services to help them use energy more efficiently, stabilize their bills and manage their accounts during this environment of tough economic times.

Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas recommend that customers sign up for Budget Billing to help manage heating bills year-round. Budget Billing spreads annual payments more evenly over the year to help customers plan their utility payments.

In addition, there are also a number of low-cost ways customers can manage their energy usage. More information can be found on the companies' websites.
