Where Do My Tax Dollars Go?

Please watch this short video to see where the 7% percent that the County levies in property taxes goes.

Did You Know...
With all the budget woes you hear about the State of Illinois and Cook County, did you know that  Lake County has a balanced budget and AAA bond rating?   Lake County is one of only 38 counties out of 3141 in the country that have AAA bond rating from Standard and Poors and Moody's Investors Services.

Did You Know...
The Lake County Board is responsible for 7% of your property tax bill. Property taxes make up  29% of the County's budget. The County also gets funding from sales and motor fuel taxes, fees for services, like water bills, etc.

So, for a house with a value of $250,000, $346 of the property tax bill goes to county government. The rest is distributed to more than 200 other taxing districts, with schools getting the biggest piece.  Each taxing body is responsible for their portion of the tax bill.  Unless taxing bodies reduce spending levels, property tax bills will remain at current levels.

Did You Know...
Did you know that the Lake County Board doesn't determine your tax bill or the value of your property? The township assessor sets the value of your property.   Each government body sets its own tax rate, approves its own budget and holds budget hearings. Taxpayers have an opportunity to provide input at these public hearings.

Did You Know...
In response to the declining economy the County Board made reductions to the 2010 budget of over $6,000,000.

Tax Payment Information

Options:
Payment options again include payment via U.S. Mail, in person at most Lake County Banks and at the Lake County Treasurer's Office, 18 N. County Street, Room 102, Waukegan. Customers paying in person must bring the original or a copy of the tax bill with them at the time of payment.

Online Payments:
Taxpayers may make payments online by credit card or E-check at lakecountyil.gov/Treasurer/payments/OnlinePayments.htm.  There is a convenience fee charged by the processing company for those paying online.

Partial Payments:
Partial payments will again be accepted once the bills have been released in the mail, with the understanding that after each of the due dates, the remaining balances could be subject to additional interest. All payments must be received and posted by 5:00 pm on November 24th to avoid the annual tax sale.

Because You Asked...

Ed asked me to include information on the upcoming AutismOne convention.  As you know, austism is a serious condition that is becoming more and more prevalent in young people.

Autism is an epidemic affecting 1 in 110 children. The diagnosis of autism can be devastating for families. The affect on towns and cities can also be traumatic as schools and other social services are often strained to the limit.

There is hope. Great strides have been made and given the proper treatments and therapies our children get better, many recover.

AutismOne is the most comprehensive conference on autism in the country and around the world with over 150 speakers and including everything from biomedical treatments to an arts festival.

2010 Highway Construction Projects

I am often asked if Lake County received any stimulus funding and what it was for.

2010 Census

By now all Lake County residents should have mailed in their 2010 Census forms.

The return rate has been good: it is ahead of the mail-in rate in 2000. Census questionnaires have been returned by over 80% of the residences in the County, which exceeds the national and state participation rates.

Here is a summary of where communities in the 18th District are at:

  • Buffalo Grove = 81%
  • Hawthorn Woods = 88%
  • Indian Creek = 83%
  • Long Grove = 82%
  • Mundelein = 83%
  • Vernon Hills = 82%

For those who have not responded: The time has come for Census Takers (also called Census Enumerators) to begin knocking on doors of the addresses that have not mailed in the form. A Census Taker is a person from the community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. It is the responsibility of a Census Taker to collect Census information from residences that have not sent back their 2010 Census form. The Census Takers will have a Census ID and a black US Census bag.

Each Census Taker has a notebook with addresses that didn't send back a filled-out Census form. If no one answers the door at a residence, the Census Taker will visit that home up to three times, each time leaving a door hanger with a phone number the resident can call to schedule a time when someone will be home and able to answer the questions on the Census form. Unsuccessful visits will be followed by up to three phone calls. The Census Taker will only ask the questions on the Census form. The Census Takers who collect the information by going door to door are sworn for life to protect the information. Any Census Taker who violates the oath commits a criminal act and can be fined up to $250,000 and be sentenced to 5 years in prison.

The Census Bureau is required by the Constitution to count everyone residing in the United States. For the Census Bureau, it does not matter how hard it is to reach someone - what matters is that everyone be contacted and counted.
Free Prescription Drug Discount Card

County residents can take advantage of a prescription drug discount card program.  The free card that is accepted at most pharmacies offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.  This is intended for people without prescription coverage or on medicines not covered by your plan.  The card may also be used where accepted to fill prescriptions for pets.  To receive a card, click here or email me your address and I will send you one!
