Globe in Hands

Greetings!

School sure felt like it was in full swing already this week! Everyone seems to be settling into the routines of classes and homework. From drop-off to passing periods to lunch to pick-up at the end of the day, the rhythm of the days are becoming steadier and more comfortable for everyone. The predictable case of first week hiccups is definitely starting to fade. Soccer has started, LEGO League is gearing up, and it is even starting to feel like fall outside!

Next week, we'll be focusing on our NWEA MAP testing. Unlike the MCA tests in the spring, these tests focus on each individual student and the growth he or she achieves during the year. Because these tests are taken via computer, we don't have to wait months for results; we can put the information to use almost immediately by identifying strengths and areas of growth for each student. Those will become part of each student's Individualized Learning Plan.

Enjoy the weekend!

Lunch Orders for October

Lunch orders for October are due in the office by September 25th.  Forms are being placed in your student's boxes next week. Click here for a copy of the form.  For more information on the lunch program, keep reading!

This school year, CVA is going to be doing lunch orders on Mondays and Tuesdays in a different way. We will be working with the Shalom Home kitchens to offer an amazing hot lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays! Rather than offering deli sandwiches that are ordered each morning, students will now receive the hot lunch menu each month and can sign up for which days they would like to have a lunch delivered. Lunch orders will be collected each month, and lunches will be delivered to the school each Monday and Tuesday for the students who ordered a lunch for that day. Hot lunches cost $4.25 each. Please see the attached September lunch menu and order form. October lunch orders will be due back to the school by September 25th.

All Monday and Tuesday hot lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid! Please do not send money with your child in the morning to purchase a lunch for that same day.

Pizza Wednesdays will continue offering cheese and pepperoni pizza for $3 per slice or 2 slices for $5. However, students are requested to pay in advance into a lunch account using the attached order form rather than bring cash each week.

Milk is also available daily at a cost of $0.05 to students. Students can sign up for milk in advance, or purchase it daily.

Family Directory

The Family directory is now available for CVA families.  It has been posted on the CVA website behind your child's password to protect private information.  Please Log in to the website on the Log ins page and a new page link called Family Directory will appear in the left hand column.  You may print it for your own use but ask that you do not share this information with anyone outside of the school community.  Thanks!

Lego League

Once again, Cyber Village Academy will be participating in LEGO League for middle school students! In this friendly state- and nation-wide competition, students build and program robots to navigate and perform through an obstacle course. Teams will meet Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 and Fridays 1:30-3:30. Interested students should sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board outside the office.

Drop-off/Pick-up Reminder

Please try to drop off your students no earlier than 8:10 in the morning. Prior to that time, teachers are busy getting ready for the day and cannot supervise students. If you arrive early, students should wait outside the building until 8:10.

At the other end of the day, students should be picked up before 3:45 pm. If that is not possible, students may participate in our after-school program on a trimester or daily basis. See Melissa in the office to sign up for the after school program.

MAP Testing Details

Students will be completing the Map tests (NWEA) in the coming weeks.  We use the test information to determine student's instructional level and to measure academic growth.

Fusion students grades 3-8 will complete the tests during their math class on Monday, September 17th;  language arts on Tuesday, September 18th, and science on September 19th.

The high school Fusion students will complete the math tests on Monday, September 24th and language arts on Tuesday, September 25th.

Pascal students have times available on September 20, 21, 24, 25 and 26.

Make-up times can be scheduled during the Pascal openings.

Please help your students by encouraging them to do their best on these tests by getting good sleep over the week-end and especially the night before the tests.  Also have your student eat a good breakfast the morning of the tests.  See other tips on the NWEA website at www.nwea.org.

Please contact Jane Hall-Dayle if you have any questions regarding the test.

Please schedule Pascal student testing times and any known make-up needs with Melisssa.

Mandatory Eagle Bluff Meeting for parents of 8th graders

Attention parents of 8th grade students! There will be a mandatory Eagle Bluff meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25th. You can choose from an 8:00am or 3:30pm in the study center. We will cover the general costs of the trip, expectations, and you can learn what Eagle Bluff is all about!

Lunch Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for a few good men and women interested in helping us serve and clean-up lunches at school. If you are interested in donning your plastic gloves and serving up trays of hot lunch or pizza to hungry kids, please contact Melissa in the office. Lunch volunteers would arrive at the school shortly before the first lunch at 11:30 am and stay until about 12:15 pm to help clean up after second lunch. You can volunteer for one day a week, one day a month, or daily (Mon-Wed) if you so desire. Thank you for your support of Cyber Village Academy!

Math & Science
Family Fun Fair

Sponsored by the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering (CSE), this free open house event takes place in Coffman Union on the U of M Minneapolis campus on Saturday, November 17 from 10am-4pm.  There will be free backpacks for the first 700 students attending!

The Math & Science Family Fun Fair is full of interactive exhibits and demonstrations from CSE faculty and students.  Students will be able to create their own color-changing jewelry, discover hidden microworlds, build an FM radio while learning about circuitry, create origami to practice geometry skills, learn about earthquakes by building structures and testing them on a shake table, control robots that can climb stairs, and much more!  This is a great event for students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.

Learn how fun physics can be by attending a Physics Force show at 10:30am or 12:30pm!  See how energy changes forms (explosions are involved!) by attending an Energy & U show at 11:30am or 1:30pm! The shows are free and tickets are available at check-in.  The shows are very popular, so arrive in advance of the show you want to see to make sure space is available!  Click here for the flyer.

You can find information online at  http://cse.umn.edu/funfair.

CVA on Facebook

There's a CVA group on Facebook! Let's try to get the WHOLE CVA community to join! That means all current and former students, everyone who's ever taught at CVA, parents of current and former students, and anyone else who is part of our extended family. Let's make it a place where everyone can stay connected.

Washington D.C. Trip

CVA is heading to Washington DC!

This is an optional field trip that is scheduled for April 24th - 27th, 2013!  This trip is open to students enrolled in grades 7, 8 and 9 at CVA.   Click here to find out about scholarships and payment options.

September 15th is the FINAL deadline for this trip - if there are fewer than 10 signed up for the trip on the 15th, the trip will be cancelled.

CVA students have received the honor of placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

Arlington National Cemetery is one of our most sacred shrines honoring our nations' Veterans and their families who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom while serving in past and present conflicts.  This ceremony will take place on April 25th with four of our students being the official wreath party.  We are very honored to be a part of this event.
