Greetings!
I've always loved the first day of school. The new clothes, the backpacks filled with crisp, clean paper, and the long, unsharpened pencils. Students and teachers (and charter school directors!) all share the experience of the sweaty palms, the uncertainty of what the year is going to bring, and the promise of many successes to come. Sometime in the near future, the backpacks will no doubt contain pencil shavings, the crunched wads of long-forgotten announcements, maybe even the old bits of now unrecognizable lunch, but we have a few weeks before we deal with that. The building has been pretty quiet this summer, and while that may be fine for summer, schools aren't meant to be empty. I'm looking forward to seeing the school come to life on Tuesday and be put to the purpose for which it exists! See you all soon!

New Authorizer
Another change that happened this summer is that Cyber Village Academy has changed authorizers. While we were originally sponsored by the Minneapolis School District, we have now switched to an excellent organization called Innovative Quality Schools, or IQS. This organization exists solely to authorize and support charter schools and will be actively involved in helping CVA better serve our students. Quoting from their mission statement:
The sole Mission of Innovative Quality is to...
- authorize a variety of models of chartered schools in both urban and greater Minnesota
- hold authorized schools accountable for achieving high standards as exemplified by each student being a successful learner prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century
- pursue schools that foster innovation in public education.
If you'd like to learn more about their organization and the support CVA will be receiving from them, you can click here to check out their website.

Checking Moodle Pages
In order to help students manage their weekly on campus and online assignments better, we plan this year to make the moodle assignment pages available earlier in the week, on Mondays. To help with parent/teacher communication we also plan to post in-class assignments for the week.
Please make sure your students know that there are many assignments that can be started/completed before the Th/Fri online days. In fact, if they wait until then to begin, they probably will not be able to complete all assignments during the school days.
Be aware that some assignments will need classroom instruction before they can be completed. But looking over an assignment before the instruction can help students learn what to listen for and maybe what questions to ask!

MAP Testing On September 17th - 19th, 2012 your child will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP). We give students MAP tests in the Fall and the Spring to determine your child's instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of reading, math and science. The data we receive from these test results will be used to help us formulate and Individualized Learning Program for each student at CVA. Your child will take the tests on a computer during the school day. Click here for more information.

Soccer Coaches!
We still need a volunteer coach or coaches for our 7th/8th grade soccer team. Please note we are more than welcome to the idea of Co-Head Coaches or Tri-Head Coaches. We just need people to oversee the practices and games. On that note, also know that Mr. Orr will take care of all the logistical work. If you have any questions about this, would like to help out or know of anyone who would, please pass this information along and contact Mr. Orr ASAP at corr@cybervillageacademy.org.
NO COACHES = NO TEAM! :(

Goodbye dear wheeled backpacks
In an effort to keep the hallways and classrooms safe and less congested we are asking students to take advantage of their lockers rather than wheeled or other types of backpacks to carry their books and supplies around from each class to the next. Whatever backpack your student uses to bring his/her books and supplies to school needs to fit into his/her locker. Advisors will work with the students to help them plan their days and keep their books and supplies in order.
Within the next month or so we will be putting combination locks on the lockers to help ensure the security of student's possessions. These are the type that are built into the locker door. You will be given your child's combination as soon as locks are installed.

Dress Code Reminder
You may be aware that the upstairs of CVA is not air conditioned. As you help your students chose cool school clothes for these last weeks of summer, please keep the school dress code in mind and avoid clothing that is inappropriate such as short shorts, spaghetti straps or any other clothing that allows underclothing to show. More details on the dress code are in the student handbook. (Available on the website, on the enrollment and registration page). Thanks!

Wireless Availability
We mentioned in an earlier newsletter that HS students are invited to bring their own computers to school. To make this possible, we have added a wireless network to the basement (High School) rooms. In addition, some of you may remember that last year students brought their own computers to the study center. In order to maintain the integrity of our servers we need to install a separate server to allow student access upstairs. Until we do so, we will not be able to provide wireless access in the Study Center. Be assured that installing a network upstairs is a very high priority for us, and as soon as funds are available, we will be doing so. The anticipated cost of this upgrade is about $4000. If you or someone you know is interested in donating directly toward this need, please let David Glick know! Students are still allowed to bring computers to study center, but will need to use the school computers to access online lessons or attend the HS study center in the basement classroom.

Fragrance Free School
We have students and staff at Cyber Village Academy that are highly sensitive to fragrances. Please be sure that you and your students are not using fragrances in their preparations for the school day. If your student would like to keep deodorant in his/her locker, please be sure that it is a stick or roll on type and not an aerosol. Likewise, please be sure that your students do not bring aerosol body or hair sprays. Thanks!

New Lunch Catering
Don't forget the hot lunch menu and order form to sign up for which days you would like to have a lunch delivered for your students. September lunch orders will be due back to the school by September 5th. All Monday and Tuesday hot lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid! Please do not send money with your child in the morning to purchase a lunch for that same day. Pizza Wednesdays will continue offering cheese and pepperoni pizza for $3 per slice or 2 slices for $5. However, students are requested to pay in advance into a lunch account using the attached order form rather than bring cash each week. Milk is also available daily at a cost of $0.05 to students or free to qualifying families. Students can sign up for milk in advance, or purchase it daily. |
After School Program
For the first time, CVA is offering a fee-based after-school program where students can work on homework or other quiet activities. For the convenience of families, this program will go until 5:30 pm, supervised by an adult. We are offering a 3-day/week options at $250/trimester/student. Late pickups after 5:30 will be assessed a late fee. If you are interested, please complete the brief survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CVA-PM before September 4. The program will begin Monday, September 10th.

This ceremony will take place on April 25th with four of our students being the official wreath party. We are very honored to be a part of this event.

CVA SOCCER
The school year is fast approaching and that also means the 3rd season of CVA Soccer! Here is some important information you will need to know.
- Registration: Please print and fill out the attached registration form and turn it in to the office. This form is also on the website under FAQ -- sports.
- Cost: The fee for 5th/6th (4th graders are welcome, but they need to understand they will be playing against older and bigger players) is $60. The fee for 7th/8th graders is $70. Please pay Melissa by Wednesday, September 5th (Checks Payable to: CVA)
- Jerseys: We will wear the same jerseys as last year, so returning players don't need to get a new one unless they want to. We will be placing the order on Wednesday, September 5th.
- Practices: Practices will be on Tuesdays after school for both teams from 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm. The first practice will be September 11th.
- Games:
- 5th/6th: Play on Wednesdays with all but maybe 1 game played at CVA. (Game times usually around 4:30 pm with the 2nd game at 5:30 pm if we play a double header)
- 7th/8th: Play on Fridays at either McMurray Fields or Ft. Snelling. Games start between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm usually. Some make-up games may be played on Mondays. Each team will play 8 or 9 games. Some players may be asked to play on both teams occasionally depending on numbers.
- The first games will be September 12th for 5th/6th and September 14th for 7th/8th.
- Equipment Needed: All players will need soccer cleats, shin guards, shorts, and long socks (they must cover the shin guards all the way). Please be aware that we do have some extra cleats, socks and shin-guards to use during the season, but not many. Please contact Mr. Orr if you are interested. If you wear glasses, you will need a strap to hold them on if you plan to wear them.
- Coaches: We need a volunteer coach for the 7th/8th grade team. Please note we are more than welcome to the idea of Co-Head Coaches or Tri-Head Coaches. We just need people to oversee the practices and games. On that note, also know that Mr. Orr will take care of all the logistical work. If you have any questions about this or know of anyone please pass this information along and contact Mr. Orr ASAP at corr@cybervillageacademy.org .
NO COACHES = NO TEAM!
Thanks! We are all looking forward to another successful soccer season at CVA! If you have any questions please contact Mr. Orr. |
