Greetings!

Just one short week after our own CVA History Day, qualifying students represented our community at the regional competition at Normandale Community College.

Congratulations to all of the students who spent the last week tweaking and polishing their presentations.  Their hard work paid off in terms of awards as well as personal satisfaction for a job well done.  Thanks again to Cherie Neima for her unflagging support of our students learning.

P.S.  Don't forget Daylight Savings Time Change this Sunday!

 Hooray for History Day

Twenty-five CVA students attended History Day Regionals Thursday night at Normandale Community College. They all did a great job and we had a lot of fun! The CVA girls accompanied by Mary Anna P. on piano were even invited to perform their new History Day song on-stage for everyone waiting for the award ceremony to begin. Way to go!

A special thanks to all the wonderful parents for your help and support.  Congratulations, everyone!

π Day @ CVA!

What is that? That symbol represents pi; a mathematical term. π is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. You need pi to calculate the circumference and area of a circle.

Why Now? π represents a number that goes on forever, but generally speaking, we use the number 3.14 to represent pi. If you think in terms of month and date, the 3 would be March and 14 would be the 14th. So, Pi Day is March 14.

What are we going to do to celebrate π Day? Well, since it is pronounced like the YUMMY pie that you eat, we are going to bring in pie for you to have with your lunch on Wednesday, March 14!!!

How do I sign up for the pie? You can sign up with Robyn at any time on Friday, March 9, Monday, March 12 or Tuesday, March 13. The cost is $3.

What kind of pies are there? There is Georgia Pecan Pie, Chocolate Crme Pie, Cookies and Crme Pie and Key Lime Pie.

Spotlight on Student Council
Student Council Sandwiches 3-8-12  The CVA Student Council successfully completed their third "sandwich-making" activity for Our Saviour's Housing in Minneapolis. Sara H, Kody H and Aniq A made 42 sandwiches to deliver to the shelter. What a great way to show you care! Thanks for volunteering! We are still accepting new members into the CVA Student Council. Permission slips are located on the board next to the student mailboxes. Our next (and last) Student Council Sandwich making event is on Thursday, May 3.

     International Days @ CVA

In May, while the 8th graders are at Eagle Bluff, we are planning for 2 days of activities designed to expand our students' international understanding.  We are planning for hands on interactive activities that will break down stereotypes and foster understanding of differences and commonalities that humans all over the world have.   Do you have expertise you could lend?  Artifacts that could be loaned to our 'international museum'?  Music you'd like to play?  Dances you'd like to teach?  please contact Lauren Odle or Jennifer Naglak if you'd like to be involved in any way, no matter how small.

Student Registration info for 2012-2013

We have completed our initial re-enrollment list for the fall! Thank you all returning families for submitting your enrollment forms or letting us know your plans, and to all new families for joining us! Here is some additional information for you about what to expect over the coming months as we finalize registration for the 2012-2013 school year.

We will be mailing out registration packets in early July with additional information and the necessary forms to get your student and family ready to start school in the fall. If you can complete and return these forms to the school prior to September, that would be ideal.

If you think your student may need an alternative placement or has special education needs and you want to discuss this before the start of the school year, please contact the school office at 651.523.7170 ext 200 or [email protected].

If your plans change unexpectedly and you find that your child(ren) will not be attending CVA in the fall, please let us know as soon as possible, as there is a waiting list for our on-campus program.

Enjoy the spring and please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions about orientation, registration, or CVA in general. We look forward to seeing you this fall!

Thanks!

A special thank you to parents Carolyn Dehnbostel and Laurie Iwan for teaming up to cover Chris Orr's classes on Monday, March 26th while he has to be away.  This is a great example of the Village working together for the good of all!

Research Opportunity

If you have a child (ages 11-15 years) with ADHD, he or she may be eligible to participate in a research study at the University of Minnesota.  This study is being conducted by the aunt of a CVA student.

The Attention, Reward, and Behavior Study is recruiting children and adolescents with ADHD for a study of the behavior and cognitive processing of youth with diverse early experiences. Participants will be compensated for their time.

If you and your child might be interested in participating in this research opportunity, please contact the research team at 612-624-2561 or email them at [email protected] and they will be happy to give you more information about the study!

MCA Testing

This year students will be taking the Math MCA online. This opportunity should be great for students as they can take the test up to three times if they do not meet or partially meet standards. Teachers will be able to receive immediate testing results. Students will be taking the test during a block schedule with their math class.

Here are the first round testing dates:

  • Level A: Tuesday, March 13 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level B: Tuesday, March 27 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level 1: Tuesday, April 3 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level 2/3: Tuesday, April 3 - 2:00 - 3:30
  • Level 3: Wednesday, April 4 - 12:30 - 2:00
  • Level 2: Wednesday, April 4 - 2:00 - 3:30

If families need to sign up for a retest you will be  contacted by the office.

Reading MCA

The Reading MCA will be on April 23 and April 24 from 8:30 - 10:00. The test will be in paper format as it has been in previous years.

Want to give your student some practice opportunities?  Click here for directions to access an item sampler. You will need your child's Marss # which you can find on last year's MCA test results or email Melissa and she can get it for you.
