Greetings!

In a recent CNN Health article, Denise Clark Pope, senior lecturer at Stanford University's School of Education and co-founder of Challenge Success, a project that aims to reduce unhealthy pressure on young people, said: "We live in a society where there is a premium on performance as opposed to mastery or effort; on grades and scores over engagement; on speed and outer appearances over intrinsic motivations. Many parents are getting caught up in the craziness, in the 'more is better' and 'faster is better' mind-set. Children end up overscheduled and in and out of schools and classes, with very little time left over, including for sleep."   Look below for some strategies for reducing your children's stress levels.

A reminder: If you haven't yet done so, please assist us in preventing the adoption of unfair financial regulations that will prevent Charter School teachers from participating in state retirement funds.  Click here to take action and please forward this email to other public charter school supporters.

MCA Testing

This year students will be taking the Math MCA online. This opportunity should be great for students as they can take the test up to three times if they do not meet or partially meet standards. Teachers will be able to receive immediate testing results. Students will be taking the test during a block schedule with their math class.

  • Here are the first round testing dates:
  • Geometry: Wednesday, February 29 - 12:30 - 2:00
  • Level A: Tuesday, March 13 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level B: Tuesday, March 27 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level 1: Tuesday, April 3 - 8:30 - 10:00
  • Level 2/3: Tuesday, April 3 - 2:00 - 3:30
  • Level 3: Wednesday, April 4 - 12:30 - 2:00
  • Level 2: Wednesday, April 4 - 2:00 - 3:30

Families will be able to sign up for a second or third test on an individual basis with Amanda.

Reading MCA

The Reading MCA will be on April 23 and April 24 from 8:30 - 10:00. The test will be in paper format as it has been in previous years.

Want to give your student some practice opportunities?  Click here for directions to access an item sampler. You will need your child's Marss # which you can find on last year's MCA test results or email Melissa and she can get it for you.

Earth Day Speaker Needed

Student Council / Eco Team Needs Your Help!

We are looking for a guest speaker for Earth Day! Earth Day is Sunday, April 22, 2012. We will be hosting a presentation at CVA before this date and are in need of a guest speaker. If you know of someone who works in the area of alternative energy, conservation, animals, recycling, or any applicable area, please ask them if they would be interested to volunteer. Please email Mr. Rand with questions or suggestions.
Strategies for Stress Relief

Allow for playtime, downtime, family time -- literally sitting down, having meals and doing activities together. Studies shows that family meals are the single strongest predictor of higher achievement and fewer behavioral issues for children between 3 and 12! Children need time to reflect, to rejuvenate, to rest, Pope says. "And we include sleep in that because lack of sleep is correlated to higher rates of depression and anxiety."

Problem-solve. Ideally, problem-solving is with kids instead of for them. Ask open-ended questions such as "What do you think may help?" Having them brainstorm a list of possibilities, reminding of strategies they have used in the past, and getting them to come up with solutions can all be very empowering for a child.

Watch, listen, communicate, reassure, validate. Listen and watch for atypical behaviors. Talk about some of the things that caused you stress and how you learned to RESPOND rather than just REACT to it.

Substitute Needed!

Mr. Orr is still looking for someone to teach his classes on Monday, March 26th. Please contact Mr. Orr ASAP at corr@cybervillageacademy.org for details.

Concordia Language Villages
Optional Overnight Field Trip
NOTE THE DATE CORRECTION PLEASE!

This week is the deadline for signing up for this trip.  6th through 10th grade Spanish students are invited to the Wilder Forest near Stillwater, MN for the Concordia Language Village overnight field trip on March 29-30.  The total cost is $69.   Please turn in registration and health forms by Feb 29th to Lauren Odle.
        Yearbook Advertising

Each year we fund our yearbook in a variety of ways.  Students pay for individual yearbooks, but we try to lower that price by adding advertising. Do you have a business or service that you'd like to advertise in our yearbook?  1/4 page ads are $25, 1/2 page are $50 and whole page ads are $100.

An additional opportunity to embarrass....er... honor your student is to send us a baby picture and caption or message for your child (or both!) for $5 each.   This includes High School students!

Please click here to email Lauren if you are interested in advertising, adding baby pictures or messages.  Our deadline is mid-April.  Thanks for your support!

Join us for History Day

Come help the Level 2, 3, and 3+ students celebrate History Day on Tuesday, February 28 from 3:00-4:00. This year's research theme is Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History. Exhibits will be in the Gym and Websites and a Documentary will be in the Music Room. More Websites will be presented in the upstairs Science Lab. Student Council students will sell snacks in the entryway to the gym. Note that students DO NOT have to bring card tables for their exhbits. We will have enough tables at school. Street parking may be your best bet. Please be careful if you enter the parking lot because Talmud Torah dismisses students at 3:15. Thank you, thank you, thank you to parents and former CVA students who have volunteered to be judges this year. We now have 20! See you at the fair!
Treats Needed for History Day Judges

Each year one of the ways we show our appreciation for History Day judges is to give them treats. This year the treats will be in the Global Studies room. Each year one of the ways we show our appreciation for History Day judges is to give them treats. Pennies for Patients updates

Thanks to you all for your wonderful donations!  This year, we earned $346.80 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  This is an incredible achievement.  Our goal was $400, and although we did not reach that goal and there will be no water balloon fight at the end of the year picnic, you should all be very proud of yourselves! WAY TO GO, CVA!
