Greetings!

According to a recent issue of HealthDay News specific areas of children's brains that are activated by humor have been identified by researchers in a first-of-a-kind study.

The findings, published Feb. 1 in the Journal of Neuroscience, provide a base for understanding how humor and other positive emotions can affect a child's well-being, according to the Stanford University School of Medicine team.

"Humor is a very important component of emotional health, maintaining relationships, developing cognitive [brain] function and perhaps even medical health," senior study author Dr. Allan Reiss, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research at Stanford, said in a university news release.

A strong sense of humor is an important part of positive emotion and may help children to be more resilient, he noted. "In particular, we think a balanced and consistent sense of humor may help children negotiate the difficult period of pre-adolescence and adolescence," Reiss said.

So, for kids, laughter really may be the best medicine! :-)

A reminder: the deadline for the IRS decision regarding teacher retirement participation has been extended.  If you haven't yet done so, please assist us in preventing the adoption of unfair financial regulations that will prevent Charter School teachers from participating in state retirement funds.  Click here to take action and please forward this email to other public charter school supporters.

        Yearbook Advertising

Each year we fund our yearbook in a variety of ways.  Students pay for individual yearbooks, but we try to lower that price by adding advertising. Do you have a business or service that you'd like to advertise in our yearbook?  1/4 page ads are $25, 1/2 page are $50 and whole page ads are $100.

An additional opportunity to embarrass....er... honor your student is to send us a baby picture and caption or message for your child (or both!) for $5 each.   This includes High School students!

Please click here to email Lauren if you are interested in advertising, adding baby pictures or messages.  Our deadline is mid-April.  Thanks for your support!

Substitute Needed

Mr. Orr is looking for someone to teach his classes on Monday, March 26th. Please contact Mr. Orr ASAP at [email protected] for details.

Volunteer to be a History Day Judge - Please!

We still are in great need of volunteers for History Day @CVA. We need 20 judges and we have 12. Thanks so much for the 12 who have stepped forward. When we have 20 judges, each judging team of two will judge 4-5 projects and we can be done in an hour. If we don't have 20 judges, the event will last much longer than 3:00 to 4:00 on Tuesday, February 28. Please help us stay on schedule and volunteer today! Cherie will give you all the information before the event including questions to ask and brief forms to fill out for each project. Judges will meet in the Global Studies room at 2:15 and begin judging at 3:00. Then they will meet in the GS room again after the judging is over to try to determine who will go on to Regionals. Did we mention there are treats? Please contact Cherie to volunteer! Thank you!
Treats Needed for History Day Judges

Each year one of the ways we show our appreciation for History Day judges is to give them treats. This year the treats will be in the Global Studies room. Each year one of the ways we show our appreciation for History Day judges is to give them treats.
