Greetings!
This coming Thursday evening (February 9th) CVA is hosting an open house from 6:30-8:00pm for families who are looking at educational options for their children for the 2012-2013 school year. In addition to the general open house, Claud Allaire and the high school teachers will be hosting a question/answer period in the Library from 6:45-7:45 for families who would like to find out more about our growing High School program. The vast majority of students who enroll in CVA find us through word of mouth. If you know of someone considering school options, would you please invite them to this event? And if you would like to find out more about the High School program, please come yourselves! If you haven't yet done so, please assist us in preventing the adoption of unfair financial regulations that will prevent Charter School teachers from participating in state retirement funds. Click here to take action and please forward this email to other public charter school supporters. David Alley |

Afton Alps
Thank you very much for all the students who participated in our Afton Alps field trip! You represented CVA very well and I heard many comments from ski instructors and staff on how polite you all were. Lastly, thanks to all the adult chaperones who helped make this an enjoyable day once again!

Lost and Found
Are you missing some blankets or cushions from movie night? There is a green, blue, orange and purple polka dot canvas bag. A black canvas bag with blankets and two Target soft cushions. Please see Dominique or Melissa in the office if this is yours. In addition, our lost and found bins upstairs under the mailboxes are filling up again. Feel free to dig through them any time you're on campus.

Let's eat lunch together - adult volunteers needed We so appreciate how parents have helped with door opening in the mornings. Now we'd like to invite you to come and eat lunch with us. Each 1/2 hour lunch group has 1-2 teachers, but the presence of more adults would help contribute toward an even more civilized environment. Please contact Dominique in the office if you'd like to sign up for a specific recurring time. If you'd like to just drop in and eat with your child(ren), you are welcome at any time.

Healthy Minds
I want to pass along a few things from a recent overview of Children's Mental Health by The American Psychiatric Association. The key to handling mental disorders of children is to recognize the problem and seek appropriate treatment. These disorders have specific diagnostic criteria and treatments, and a complete evaluation by a mental health provider can determine whether a child needs help.
It is estimated that as many as one in ten children between ages six and twelve experience persistent feelings of sadness-the hallmark of depression. Since children may not be able to express or understand many of the core symptoms that would indicate depression in adults, parents should be aware of some key behaviors-in addition to changes in eating or sleeping patterns-that may signal depression in children:
* A sudden drop in school performance * Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed * Outbursts of shouting, complaining, unexplained irritability, or crying * Thoughts of death or suicide * Expressions of fear or anxiety * Aggression, refusal to cooperate, antisocial behavior * Use of alcohol or other drugs * Constant complaints of aching arms, legs, or stomach with no apparent cause
Treatment is essential for children struggling with depression so that they can be free to develop necessary academic and social skills. Treatment can involve psychotherapy either alone or in combination with medication. In counseling, children can learn to express their feelings and to develop ways of coping with their illness. Some children also respond to antidepressant medications, but their use must be closely monitored by parents and their doctors. Ideally, psychiatric medication should not be the only form of treatment, but should be part of a comprehensive program.
For more information on medications see the Parents Medication Guide for Treating Depression from APA and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. |

Pennies for Patients
Over the next few weeks, your child will have the opportunity to learn first-hand the powerful feeling that comes from helping others. Pennies for Patients is a service learning program in which kids collect spare change to help people with blood cancer.
Funds are collected from friends and family in honor of local student survivors and current patients.
This is week 1 of our Pennies for Patients Drive. So far, we
have raised $193.27 for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. This included 4,237 pennies, 400 nickels, 359 dimes and 136 quarters, along with one- and five-dollar bills and a few checks (made out to LLS). Our goal by Friday, Feb 17 is to reach $400. If the students achieve/surpass this goal, the CVA Student Council/Eco Team will organize a water-balloon fight at the end of the year picnic. To learn more about the LLS or Pennies for Patients, please click here to follow the link to their website.

Volunteers Still Needed for History Day Judges
CVA History Day is February 28 this year from 3:00-4:00 in the gym for parents and family friends. We are looking for judges who will work in teams to judge approximately 5 projects per team. Thanks to the 2 people who have volunteered already, we need several more.
Judges will meet in Cherie's classroom at 2:15. She will provide judging sheets and walk through the judging process with the judges prior to the start of the event at 3:00. Judges should be prepared to enjoy the students' presentations! Judges will then meet with Cherie after the end of the fair at 4:00 in her classroom to discuss findings as a group. These findings are critical to determine which students will go on to regionals.
If you are interested in volunteering to be a History Day Judge, please send Cherie an email.

DEMOCRACY NEEDS YOU!
A message from the MN Association of
Charter Schools
On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., five of Minnesota's political parties (Constitution, Democratic- Farmer-Labor (DFL), Green, Independence and Republican) will hold precinct caucuses to begin the process of selecting legislative candidates and shaping public policy issues for this year's elections. It is an especially important year as all (67) state senators and (134) state legislators, as well as members of the U.S. House and one U.S. Senate seat are up for election.
Every person eligible to vote in the general election on November 6th and who resides in the precinct in which he or she is eligible to vote can attend and vote in precinct caucuses.
Precinct caucuses are grassroots democracy at the most elemental level - it is you and your neighbors discussing candidates and policies that will shape the future of our state and nation.
For more information about precinct caucuses and the location of your precinct caucus of the political party of your choice:
