STEP AFRIKA! ThursdaySeptember 16, 2010 9:00 PM Performing Arts Center Drama Theatre FREE for FSU Students w/ID FSU Employee $10
Get ready to raise the roof as Step Afrika!, the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping, will bring down the house with its high-energy performance. The art of step dancing is a mix of body percussion and poetry slam and has been popular among the African-American fraternity and sorority circuit for decades. The body is used as an instrument to produce unique rhythms through tightly choreographed footsteps, claps and spoken word. You will be amazed as performers mix traditions found in dances from Africa with contemporary moves. Celebrating over 15 years, the Washington, D.C.-based Step Afrika! has performed in concert halls around the world and has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS and NPR. Step up, watch and celebrate this high-energy and unique cultural art form. "Knee slaps, flat-footed stomps, sandpapery drags and resounding claps rattle the rafters whenever Step Afrika! takes the stage. The energetic Washington, D.C.-based company makes irrepressible body music, and audiences whoop and holler their approval like a Baptist revival."
