February  2011
 Love is in the Air

From the eyes of Princess Grace

Grace in pink

The story of Houmas House is 'sweet', literally.  It all began with the cultivation of sugar in 1806.  From there Houmas House became the largest sugar plantation in the world, stretching over 300,000 acres.  It was during the John Burnside era (1858-1881) that Houmas House truly flourished. It was in that era that the mansion was  known for its extravagance as it is today.
Known today as the Sugar Palace,  there is more sweetness than just sugar cane at this site.  Houmas House has hosted more than 300 weddings over the last 5 years, boasted the most romantic restaurant, Latil's Landing, and been voted Favorite Plantation by Country Roads Magazine in 2010.  We're all about the love!
This time of year always reminds me of my true love, King Sam. We were married on the front steps of Houmas House in 2003.  1500 people attended our Royal Wedding and celebrated our puppy love.
As you can see, LOVE is what we do best!  Do you have a Houmas House love story? Share with me!

Secrets from Latil's Landing

Poached Pear

Poached Pear

Servings: 4

4 Medium Pears, peeled

3 Cup Red Wine

1/2 Cup Sugar

1 Cinnamon Stick

1 Tablespoon Brandy (optional)

Place all ingredients (except brandy if used) in a small saucepan. Simmer the pears until just soft, about 15 minutes.  Remove the pears with a slotted spoon. Place in a bowl and allow to cool at room temperature.  Add the brandy (if used) and raise the flame to medium high.  Reduce the sauce by half (about 10 minutes). Allow to cool.  Pour over the pears. Cover with plastic film and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.  Serve cold.

We're Feeling the Love!
Country Roads Best Of
Thanks to the readers of Country Roads Magazine for voting Houmas House Plantation their Favorite Plantation!  Maybe it's the history, maybe it's the fact that we had a dog wedding, or maybe it's because we make the fantasy of antebellum life become real.
Whatever the reason, we'll take it!  Thanks to all who have visited and shared they're experiences on social networks, blogs, and emails. We look forward to your return visits!
