Jolly Good Games!
London Smiles and Shines for Four Glorious Weeks
NCO in London

The sun came out, the rings went up on Tower Bridge, the Queen parachuted from a helictopter with 007 and the Games were on!

For four amazing weeks -- three in August and another in September -- many days in balmy breeze under California-style blue skies, the athletes of the world -- Olympic and Paralympic -- swam, ran, rode, spun, dueled, leapt, splashed, laughed and cried their way into our minds and hearts.

The venues were spectacular, the courses iconic, the volunteers friendly and funny, the Olympic Park, venues and Tube packed but moving, and the Londoners welcoming and gracious. The only challenging aspect were ticket prices and access -- a long-time Olympic issue. That was offset by the ten free events that offered the best seat in the house and the best spirit of the Games -- marathons, triathlons, race walks, and marathon swims. Americans cheered for Brits, Brits cheered for the French (well, almost) and we all cheered for every athlete, first or last.

The best quotes of the Games were from a British fellow watching the men's triathlon: "We Brits are known as a dour lot, but these two weeks life is good." And a BBC broadcaster the morning after the Olympic Closing Ceremonies: "For two weeks we are one, then we go back to our lives." Fortunately, the Paralympic Games came two weeks later, easing the hosts' Olympic hangover.
