Weekly Update March 30, 2010
| Greetings!
Just a few more days of March and we'll be starting the month long work of marking Autism Awareness Month. This week is rather quiet - as quiet as the Center can be with our annual walk less than 4 weeks off. We're gathering speed as the day approaches and many of you have created pages on Firstgiving. If you haven't done this yet , it's quick it's easy and after sending out your page to family friends you can sit back and relax until Sunday April 25th. OR you can join us at 7 PM on April 6th to Volunteer to take a more active role in making this day a memorable one for everyone. Call me or register on-line at our website. MAny who walk also volunteer to help with set up and at posts during the walk.

New Theories of Autism, Asperger Syndrome By Psych Central News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on April 2, 2009
Two separate new theories have been proposed that may explain the development of autism, and the milder form of autism known as Asperger Syndrome.
The new theory of autism that suggests that the brains of people with autism are structurally normal but dysregulated, meaning symptoms of the disorder might be reversible. The theory suggests that autism is a developmental disorder caused by impaired regulation of a bundle of neurons in the brain stem that processes sensory signals from all areas of the body.
Some of the symptoms Asperger Syndrome, such as a need for routine and resistance to change, could be linked to levels of the stress hormone cortisol suggests the second theory.
Normally, people have a surge of this hormone shortly after waking, with levels gradually decreasing throughout the day. It is thought this surge makes the brain alert, preparing the body for the day and helping the person to be aware of changes happening around them. Researchers have discovered that children with Asperger Syndrome do not experience this surge.

Division of Autism Social Skills Funding |
The Resource Center received funds from DDS's Autism Division to benefit families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, here in Central Massachusetts. Again we decided to take all the funding provided by the division and put it towards funding Social Skills Programs for Division of Autism eligible children with Asperger Syndrome or High Functioning Autism up to the age 18. If the funding is not depleted by mid April remaining funds will be devoted to Family activities as all funds must be depleted by June 30, 2010. Parents interested in receiving funding must first call the Resource Center to be approved for funding . If you have not contacted DDS to determine if your child is eligible you can call us at the Resource Center and we will assist you in filing an application. After being verified for funding families may call the various providers below to schedule an intake . Clinicians make the final decision for inclusion in a group . Additionally we have reserved some of the funding for those who have been in a therapeutic relationship with other providers and attend Social Skills groups. No funds will be released to families, providers will be sent the funding for approved children directly.
