CCJ's Kettering University Graduates
On December 12, 2009, two CCJ scholarship recipients fulfilled their dreams to become engineers when they graduated with honors from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. Nackia Chamberlain is originally from the Rockfort Community in east Kingston. A graduate of Ardenne High School, she was the recipient of the Douglas McIntyre (deceased founding member of CCJ) Scholarship. Nackia graduated from the university Summa Cum Laude with a 3.97 GPA with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Tevita Skeine grew up in the Rose Town Community and is a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School. She was the recipient of the Roger and Kathy Paris Scholarship (longtime supporters of CCJ). Tevita graduated Cum Laude with a 3.66 GPA with a degree in Industrial Engineering. Both students received the University's President's medal for their years of hard work. They will both return to Jamaica to work in their respective fields.
The commencement was attended by several friends, family, and representatives from CCJ.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On January 12, 2010, a major earthquake hit Haiti devastating the capital and its surrounding areas. The earthquake has been characterized as one of the deadliest that has ever hit the entire planet earth. The number of human beings who lost their lives is not yet established although CNN is currently reporting over 100,000. However, the death toll is expected to be much higher when all the rubble has been cleared. Ground relief efforts in Haiti are difficult because of the extent of infrastructural damages that the quake has caused and information coming from Haiti is still very limited.
The Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti would like to extend our deepest condolences to anyone affected by this tragic natural disaster. We would also like to extend our appreciation to all concerned citizens and members of the Haitian American community here in the Chicagoland area for the phone calls, e-mails and prayers we have been receiving. An emergency meeting was held on 1/12/10 and a Town Hall meeting was held on 1/13/10 for the community and local elected officials to come together to discuss the situation and brainstorm about going forward. The Red Cross was also in attendance to provide mental health professionals who specialize in coping with tragedies of this nature.
We invite all organizations and individuals to join us in exchanging ideas on how to best proceed in providing assistance to Haiti, especially to those regions grossly affected by this disaster.
In the past the Haitian Congress to Fortify has supported Haiti when faced with the hurricane crises through a special 501(c)3 fund / account at Charter One Bank: Haitian Crisis Relief Fund. For this relief effort, tax deductible donations can be deposited directly into this account by accessing our website at www.haitiancongres.org or donations can be mailed to our offices as follows:
We are a small; all-volunteer organization with no paid staff or traditional office space, just a tightly-knit and influential membership bonded by a strong common identity and commitment to improving the lives for those of our native and adopted homelands.
