ASQLA MEMBER MEETING - October 10, 2012

Ron Lombrano

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Root Cause and Corrective Action"

Please join the ASQLA Section 0700 for its monthly member meeting on October 17, 2012. The meeting will be held at Mattel in El Segundo, CA. This meeting is an opportunity to network with other Quality professionals and to learn about current techniques and technologies. Our speaker this month is Mr. Ron Lombrano speaking on  "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Root Cause and Corrective Action".

Ron Lombrano will share with us the intricacies of identifying problems, annotating those problems, and moving from identification to planning solutions and making sure the solutions are effective. As Quality professionals we are all faced with nonconformances that effect product, processes and personal safety.

The methods and concepts developed in this presentation have been developed in conjunction with AS9100 internal auditors. It must be noted that the root cause, corrective action concept presented is well proven in the defense and aerospace industry workplace.

The goal of this presentation is to make you and your fellow co-workers the most successful problem solvers ever.

Ron has over 25 years of experience and has held several managerial positions in Operations, Quality and Mission Assurance in automotive and aerospace industries. Currently he is a manager of Audits and Surveillance at the Raytheon Company.

Ron holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from California State University Long Beach.

Message from the Chair - Lane Parrott

On Saturday I was in a reflective mood. Among my thoughts was our ISO 9001 Recertification Audit coming up in March 2013. I typically lay out the Audit Preparation Plan six months in advance. To get motivated I went on the DNV website to see if there were any new seminars. I stumbled upon a free webinar: The next version of ISO 9001 - What to expect. Excellent immediate gratification!

The webinar was given by Nigel Croft, who is the Chairman of ISO Subcommittee ISO/TC 176/SC 2, Quality Systems. He provided an interesting perspective on the original mission of the standard and the mission of ISO 9001: 2015.

Original Mission:

To establish generic quality management system requirements that provide the foundations to build confidence in goods and services delivered throughout the supply chain to organizations and people worldwide.

ISO 9001: 2015 Mission:

To develop High Quality voluntary international standards which facilitate international exchange of goods and services, supports sustainable and equitable economic growth, promotes innovation and protects health, safety and the environment.

The above mission was influenced by an extensive survey, which indicated the following global concerns:

  • Increased customer expectations for confidence in products and services
  • Increasing use of QMS standards for global trade
  • Increased use of ISO 9001 by various industry sectors: Healthcare, Aerospace, government, telecommunication
  • Credibility of 3rd party certification
  • Drive for greater efficiency (lean initiatives)
  • Increased sophistication of quality management tools
  • Increasing regulatory emphasis on public health and safety (food, medical devices)

Future concepts taken into consideration in ISO 9001: 2015 include the following:

  • Integration of "Risk Based thinking"
  • Better alignment with business processes
  • Outputs matter (product conformity and process effectiveness)
  • Knowledge Management
  • Life Cycle Management

In summary:

The primary use of the standard is to provide confidence in companies products.

The secondary purpose is organizational improvement.

"ISO 9001 is a documented system NOT a system of documents."

I look forward to seeing you and hearing your thoughts at the October Meeting.
