Street Fair Coming to Downtown West Orange

Street

Mark your calendars to join your friends and neighbors at West Orange's 5th Annual Downtown Street Fair, Sunday, May 24th, 11AM to 5 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.  Bring the kids and enjoy continuous entertainment, music, rides, and food.

This fun-filled day is sponsored by the Downtown West Orange Alliance and will feature more than 100 artists, crafters, and vendors.  Fabulous food, live music, and entertainment for children and adults will grace the event.  Pony rides, a petting zoo, and inflatable rides will also be on site.Click here to download a coupon for (1) FREE Moonwalk ride or game.

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the day will be the pie-eating contest at 2:30pm sponsored by Supreme Bakery.  The contest has 2 categories: 15 years old and under and 16 years old and older.  Supreme Bakery will provide a constant flow of small cream pies to competitors, who will try to devour as many as they can in the allotted 5 minute time period in hopes of winning cash prizes.  Rich Stolz, the owner of Supreme Bakery, is proud to introduce an old-fashioned family event to the downtown fair.  If you would like to download this year's application for the Pie-Eating contest click here:Pie Eating Contest application.

Main Street will be closed for the day between Northfield Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Avenue.  Free parking will be available behind Town Hall, 66 Main Street, at 80 Main Street, and at 61 Main Street, all conveniently located close to the event.  For more information, call the Downtown Alliance office at 973-325-4109 or visit our website at www.downtownwestorange.org.  If you would like to be a vendor, click here to download a vendor application or contact Darryl Walker, www.StreetFairs.org, at 908-654-1400 or e-mail him at info@StreetFairs.org.

New Book Features Historic Postcards of Downtown West Orange!

Local author Joseph Fagan pens tribute to his hometown

Joseph Fagan has family roots that span over four generations in West Orange. Raised and educated in town, he is also the author of Eagle Rock Reservation. The images in West Orange have been proudly selected from the author's personal collection

Although West Orange is best known for Thomas Edison, there is much more to this New Jersey town than its famous inventor. Through vintage postcards, West Orange explores the town's history from the days of cable cars that once climbed the mountain to the long-gone amusement park at Crystal Lake.

"West Orange in vintage postcards is inspired and written with the hope to capture and document the history of the last century," Fagan said. "Hopefully for a new generation to discover the familiar roads of home and to experience the local history within the community they call home."

Highlights of West Orange:

·   Includes Charles Duryea, inventor of the gasoline engine in America

·   Features West Orange's two train stations that are no longer in existence

·   Explains the construction of the cable car route up the mountain in West Orange from the 1880s

·   Shows how Llewellyn Park and Eagle Rock share a common beginning
