Saturday, May 15, 8am to Noon
Brewer Auditorium
The City of Brewer's Stormwater Public Education and Participation Committee is soliciting help from community groups, businesses, and individuals in conducting our "6th annual Stream Cleanup" along the Brewer Shore of the Penobscot River on May 15, 2010.
We will meet at the Brewer Auditorium at 8 AM for coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts. There will be a short safety discussion and group dispersion to various locations of the shoreline between the Eddington and Orrington town lines. Groups will be assigned to areas with a consideration for the safety of the volunteers. Cleanup activities will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 12:00 PM. The group will reassemble for a picnic lunch and celebration at the Auditorium.
A rain date of May 22, 2010 has been chosen in the event of extremely inclement weather.
This is an opportunity to build upon the evolving renaissance of the Penobscot River and to develop a greater appreciation for the river. We hope for and expect participation from youth oriented groups and adults, particularly those interested in ecology. The stream cleanup promises to be a fun and socially rewarding annual event, each year focusing on different locations in Brewer. The prior five years of cleanup activities have seen more than 700 volunteers, collecting over 25 tons of trash and debris along the Penobscot River, its tributaries and other sensitive areas in Brewer.
If you have any questions relative to the "Stream Cleanup" program or would like to sign up to participate contact Ken Locke, City of Brewer Stormwater Coordinator at 989-5417 or via e-mail at klocke@brewerme.org. Media groups are encouraged to participate.
The Brewer Stormwater Public Education and Participation Committee is a volunteer group comprised of City staff and a community representative. The Committee was formed to comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency's Phase 2 Stormwater regulations. No funding has been provided by the USEPA and no additional personnel have been hired by the City to comply with these measures. No taxpayer funds are used for this program.
