A Pair of Spittoons

Spittoons On the floor of the Bottle Room are two brown mottled ceramic spittoons or cuspidors. This type of glazed earthenware was first developed in England about 1825 and called Rockingham. The product proved popular and eventually more than 70 American potteries were producing a variety of products including pitchers, flasks, mugs, and cuspidors.

English visitors, including Charles Dickens, were shocked at the number of Americans casually spitting on the floors of hotels and inns in the early 1800's. Eventually the cuspidor, or as it later was named spittoon, arrived to help with the problem. Early ones were helpfully embossed with "Please Spit in This Box."

Rockingham glazes were considered ideal for spittoons as the brown color helped hide a multitude of sins. The pair in the Bellingrath Collection is unmarked and is thought to date around 1860. They feature a decorative shell motif making them a step above more utilitarian examples.
