Cascading Chrysanthemums

Fall is a beautiful time of year... especially at Bellingrath Gardens and Home! Our gardeners have been working all year to grow cascade mums, mum baskets, garden mums and mum orbs. They are beginning to make their appearance now. The peak of mum season should be the second full week of November - just in time for the second annual Kiku Matsuri celebration. |

Kiku Matsuri Chrysanthemum Festival Saturday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Come help us celebrate Mums with an Asian Flair at Bellingrath's Kiku Matsuri - Chrysanthemum Festival! Kiku Matsuri is the fifth of the five festivals in the traditional Japanese calendar. The chrysanthemum is the official flower of Japan and is a symbol of longevity, power, dignity and nobility.
Just as our Cascade Mums begin to peak on Saturday, November 13th; Bellingrath will welcome the Bonsai Society and their beautiful living sculptures which will be on display in the Magnolia Cafe along with Ikebana arrangements. The Sumi-e Society will be demonstrating their art and will be happy to teach you to draw chrysanthemums. The Mobile Ichihara Sister City Association (MISCA) will be on Live Oak Plaza to share information about their organization and teach the art of Origami. You can help us make an origami crane chain. We will complete the celebration with an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony in the Boehm Gallery! |
Ikebana Workshops
Presented by the Mobile Chapter of Ikebana International

Bellingrath Gardens and Home is pleased to welcome back the Mobile Chapter of Ikebana International as part of our celebration of chrysanthemums. This year the Mobile Chapter of Ikebana International will present two Ikebana workshops led by Kaoru Yamada, an Ikebana Master in the Sogestu School in Japan. The first class will be held on Friday, November 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This class is for intermediate or advanced students that have Ikebana training or experience. The cost of the class, which includes all the materials and lunch is $46 for non-members and $35 for members of the Friends of Bellingrath. To assure personalized attention, the class will be limited to 20 students and registration is required.
The second class for beginning Ikebana students will be held on Saturday, November 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The cost for this class, which includes materials, will be $30 for non-members and $20 for members of the Friends of Bellingrath. Magic Christmas in Lights Photography Workshop

If you have tried to photograph the beauty of Bellingrath's Magic Christmas in Lights show, you know it is not easy to do. Calagaz Camera will present a very special photography seminar at Bellingrath Gardens and Home on Saturday, November 20, 2010 to help all of us learn how to get the perfect shot!
David Akoubian from Bear Woods Photography in Atlanta, Georgia will be the instructor for this very special seminar. David has over 30 years of photography experience and specializes in outdoor and nature photography. He conducted a fantastic class for Calagaz at Bellingrath earlier this year.
The folks at Calagaz have organized a learning experience that no serious photographer will want to miss. The seminar will begin on Friday evening, November 19th with a reception at their store located at 90 Springdale Boulevard at 6:00 p.m. Participants will gather at the store on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to board a bus to travel to Bellingrath Gardens and Home. David will conduct a workshop before everyone spreads into the Garden as the sun is setting for their private viewing of Magic Christmas in Lights. After the photo shoot, a light supper will be served before boarding the bus back to Calagaz Camera where $1,000 worth of door prizes will be given away.
