The Bellingrath Collection: Belle Camp Painting
by Tom McGehee Belle Camp

Visitors entering the Day Parlor of the Bellingrath Home notice an oil painting hanging over the fireplace which depicts "Belle Camp" around 1920.  The view is from the river, looking up towards one of the old cabins.  Standing out on the dock is Frank Woodard, Mr. Bellingrath's fishing guide.  Just visible is a small red sign near the steps behind him which says "Drink Coca-Cola in Bottles."

This view is in the camp's earliest days.  The azaleas have not yet arrived.  There is no running water, no electricity, no telephones and Mr. Bellingrath enjoyed every minute in the rustic setting.

To commemorate those early days, Walter Bellingrath hired artist Phillip H. Giddens of Birmingham to paint Belle Camp from a favorite photograph.  Giddens (1898-1972) was a friend of portrait artist Jay Jacobs who had recently completed a portrait of Mr. Bell which hangs in the Living Room of the Home.

According to letters in file, Giddens completed the painting in September of 1944 and was planning to deliver the painting that month.  The price is not mentioned but the resulting painting allows visitors arriving in the Bellingrath Home to see the property's history and to learn a little bit about Walter Bellingrath's fond memories of Belle Camp in its early days.
