Bellingrath's Featured Plant
Ginger Lily
Curcuma petiolata
Several varieties of curcumas have been cultivated for centuries in India, China and Southeast Asia. The Curcuma petiolata are herbaceous perennials with pleated leaves about two feet tall and with pink-bracted loose cones with yellow flowers. Botanists suspect the variety is part of an older selection called C. longa because it is last longer, has more rosy blooms and has less pungent tubers. These gingers have great potential for use as flowering pot plants, both indoors and as patio and landscape plants. The Curcuma petiolata is an easy growing plant and does well in medium sun or bright shade. Flowering generally begins in mid-summer. Although it can survive cold temperatures (0F or -17C) while dormant during the winter, it requires heat to grow well and is slow to break dormancy in the spring.

What's it Like to Be Crude on the Coast?
Find out at Kids Gulf Discovery Day
Wednesday, July 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Bellingrath Gardens and Home will host Kids Gulf Discovery Day on Wednesday, July 7 th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Kids will be able to have fun and get their hands dirty learning about the area's ecology and the impact of the Gulf oil spill. Local environmental organizations will have activities, demonstrations and displays that will engage kids. They will "soak up" various methods of cleaning up oil and explore how they can help protect our precious waterways.
Participating organizations include: Mobile Baykeeper; Dauphin Island Sea Lab; Keep Mobile Beautiful; The Nature Conservancy; The Fowl River Baykeeper/Fowl River Area Community Association; Alabama Coastal Foundation; Dog River Clear Water Revival; the U.S. Fish & Wildlilfe Service; Fowl River Volunteer Fire Department; Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources Marine Police.
Kids Gulf Discovery Day will replace the previously scheduled Summer Kid's Kruise. Bellingrath restructured the annual cruise event because the Southern Belle River Cruiser has been recruited to assist with cleanup activities on Dauphin Island and will not be offering sightseeing cruises through September 2010.
Kids Gulf Discovery Day is open to all visitors with paid admission. Garden admission for adults is $11, $6 for children 5 - 12 and free for children 4 and under. Reservations requested. Guests may also pre-order box lunches when they register or upon arrival. There are additional charges to tour the Bellingrath Museum Home.
