 Yoshino Cherry
YOSHINO CHERRY
Prunus x yedoensis

No doubt you have noticed how glorious the cherries are in Mobile.   The pale pink white blooms are Yoshino Cherry - the famous cherry of the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Monument.  This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Yoshio Cherry being introduced into the United States.  Trees were brought into the Plant Introduction Station where they were placed in quarantine.  The United States was suffering from Chestnut blight, so unfortunately the cherries were burned.  The Mayor of Tokyo was somewhat offended but sent a shipment of cherries two years later to Washington, D.C.  The Tidal Basin was being completed and the cherries were planted to provide spring color.  We have a glorious specimen of this tree on the North Terrace of the Bellingrath Home.  Happy 100th anniversary.

55th Annual Rose Show Cancelled
 Rose Show
The 2010 Spring Rose Show that was scheduled for April 17th and 18th has been cancelled due to the severity of the winter which has caused significant delays in the development of the rose blooms after the annual pruning.
According to Bellingrath Rosiarian Linda Guy; the roses are about three weeks behind their normal growth just like several of our other spring flowers. She expects Bellingrath's first blush to be in mid May.

The Mobile Rose Society presents the Rose Show each year at Bellingrath Gardens and Home the third weekend in April.  People that love roses or want to learn to start growing roses are invited to the show.  Amateur rose gardeners are also encouraged to enter their best blooms in the show.  At each rose show, members of the Mobile Rose Society provide containers and tags as well as assist in identifying each bloom that is entered. Society members are also available throughout the weekend to answer questions about growing and identifying roses.
