Introducing Bellingrath's New Cell Phone Audio Tour
Bellingrath is always looking for cost effective ways to enhance the visitor's experience. With that in mind, Bellingrath has implemented a new cell phone audio tour program. Visitors will be able to access interpretive content over their own cell phones. The tour will be free, but visitors will use their cell minutes during the tour.
The audio tour features six locations or stops in the Gardens; the Bellingrath's history, the Rose Garden, the Great Lawn, the Bellingrath Home, the Delchamps Gallery of Boehm Porcelain and the Mirror Lake Overlook. Each stop describes the origin of the location and its significance today. Additional stops will be added over the next few months. |
New Koi Released into the Asian American Garden Pond
Bruce Johnson of Blackwater Creek Koi Farm, Inc. and former Bellingrath gardner donated 18 Koi to Bellingrath Gardens and Home. The fish were from 10" to 14" in length. Johnson, Barbara Smith and Dr. Bill Barrick relased the new coy into the pond of the Asian American Gardens on Friday, August 14, 2009.
Koi are are ornamental domesticated varieties of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are commonly kept for decorative purposes in outdoor ponds and water gardens. They are sometimes also called Japanese carp. Koi were developed from common carp in Japan in the 1820s, and are still very popular there as they are a symbol of love and friendship. Many different colors and color patterns have since been developed; common colors include white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
