Okay, I admit it. I have played a few April Fools pranks in my day. I will even admit to having a slight reputation of being an office prankster...this is true. So when I was asked to write a story for this quarter's newsletter, I was tempted to write a crazy piece about something so incredibly hard to believe it would be obvious that my article was in fact, a prank. I sat with this idea for a while and I began to imagine all the glorious press we would receive. I imagined reader comments flooding in about how they loved the article; how they thought it was so funny, and that it made their day!
Success.
After all, Google, Burger King and Taco Bell have all played some pretty hilarious pranks, all which garnered media attention. Anyone remember the "left handed Whopper" or the "Taco Liberty Bell?"
As I sat at my computer in my state of delight, I figured my prank "article" would be the announcement that the Lynnwood Convention Center was going to be converted into the Pacific Northwest Clown Training Academy. This was going to be awesome.
In researching April Fool's Day, I found some interesting information. According to lab42.com, 56 percent of Americans have a "mischievous" attitude towards the day, or holiday in my book. This means that the other 44 percent of those polled felt paranoid, indifferent or annoyed. Annoyed? Really? I thought about this and soon my state of delight faded to a state of fear. I really don't want to annoy our readers or worse, cause them paranoia. I personally know people who suffer from Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, and I certainly didn't want to scare anyone. Soon those reader comments I had imagined earlier as so positive, weren't anymore. A fear of bad press set in. So there it went, my awesome idea was drowned in the realization that this could all go horribly wrong.
Darn..."Clown Academy" had such a ring to it.
So instead, how about some cute, fun ideas for dinner time pranks to pull on your children...or coworkers. ;)

Recipe by Chef Michael
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Button mushrooms, 1 lb, roughly chopped Onion, 1/4 inch, diced Garlic, 2 tbs, minced Thyme, 1 tb, fresh, chopped Rosemary, 1 tb, fresh, chopped Sage, 1/2 tsp, rubbed Herbs de Provence, 1 tb Nutmeg, 1/4 tsp Butter, 1/2 tb Flour, 1/2 tb Madeira or Marsala, 2 cups Heavy Cream, 2 qt Salt and Pepper to taste
Brown butter in one large heavy-bottomed stock pot. Add mushrooms, onions, garlic, sage and herbs de provence. Cook mushrooms about 10 minutes. The mushrooms will release a lot of liquid. Add flour and stir in evenly. Cook about 10 minutes, stirring and scraping frequently any flour that might settle on the bottom of the stock pot. Add Madeira and let simmer 10 minutes, again stirring and scraping frequently. Add cream, thyme and rosemary. Bring to a boil and let simmer 20 minutes. Add nutmeg and season to taste with salt and pepper. Puree with an immersion blender or bar blender until relatively smooth. Check seasoning. Serves 8-10. |
