A Message from the General Manager

Kelvin Moore, GMSpring time in the Puget Sound normally conjures up thoughts of renewal and awakening. This year, spring is a time for reflection for the Lynnwood Convention Center, as April will mark our 5th year of operation.

In those five years, we've welcomed over 350,000 guests to the facility while hosting over 2,100 events and 2,600 event days. Additionally, Convention Center events and activities have generated an estimated $60 million in economic impact for the City of Lynnwood and surrounding communities.

Whether community events or small private meetings, multi-day conventions or black tie galas, life affirming weddings or home and garden shows...you've been there. And we appreciate your support. You were also there during the financial crisis that led to an economic recession. So we took steps to make sure that we were there for you by adjusting our business model to accomodate your needs.

We've worked tirelessly to provide you with a first class facility, the best possible environment, the highest level of service and most flexible terms possible in order to meet your needs and earn your loyalty. Rest assured we will continue to do so.

As we move forward throughout 2010, we will spotlight various events and milestones from our first five years. In this edition of our newsletter, we spotlight our first wedding. We will also spotlight various community events such as Sample South County and the City of Lynnwood Public Art Reception. Both events will take place on April 14, 2010, and we invite you to come out and join us.

It has indeed been a memorable first five years. Thank you for being there. We promise to continue to be there for you in years to come.

The Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance (PNAA) kicked off its 9th Annual Aerospace Conference in Lynnwood, Washington on February 9-10, 2010.Attendees gained insight into current and future economic conditions, found out how to access emerging industries and opportunities, and met one-on-one with buyers at the Purchasing Fair.

PNAA Pickup ImagePNAA's two-day event, themed "Emerging Aerospace Opportunities," included speakers from Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, EADS, G2 Solutions, Holder Aerospace, Leeham Co, Lockheed Martin, Moss Adams, and Vaupell.Richard Aboulafia from the Teal Group has returned as the featured speaker. Aboulafia is an internationally recognized authority in the aerospace industry and presented his annual "State of the Industry," which included a forecast of the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. One of the highlights of the conference was a panel discussion between Aboulafia, Scott Hamilton, and Michel Merluzeau moderated by KING 5's Glenn Farley.

"It's more important than ever for local companies to realize that our northwest heritage as the leading aerospace manufacturing region in the world is under assault." said Kevin Steck, PNAA Chair and Vice President of Composites Atlantic. "We are constantly challenged from manufacturers off shore and from within the United States. This conference brings our members together to discuss how to enhance our competitiveness, better understand industry trends and capitalize on a global economic environment."

PNAA Reception ImageIn addition to conference presentations, an exhibit area, and multiple networking opportunities; attendees participated in a Purchasing Fair, meeting one-on-one with OEMs & Tier One buyers who are directly involved in buying aerospace parts, components and assemblies. This event fosters a better understanding of how to compete globally as an aerospace supplier.

"Our membership is becoming increasingly regional as we have come to appreciate the natural competitive advantages of the Pacific Northwest - generational engineering and manufacturing know-how, supply chain infrastructure, supportive government agencies and world class universities" said John Graham, PNAA Secretary and President of Fulcrum Associates.

To recognize their contribution to the advancement of aerospace in the Northwest, PNAA also presented three awards for excellence in aerospace. The Aerospace Company of the Year was awarded to Protective Coatings, and was accepted by Director of Quality, Rocky Blue. The Aerospace Executive of the Year was awarded to Clif Johnson of Esterline Hytek Finishes. The Chairman's Award was given to Michael Mooney for his work with the Inland NorthWest Aerospace Consortium (INWAC).

"We're excited about the conference but we're even more excited about the future," said Steck. "We intend to retain the crown of leadership in aerospace engineering and manufacturing excellence."

Recipe by Chef Michael

Nothing says spring time in the northwest like the arrival of asparagus. This dish can be served for breakfast with poached or scrambled eggs or as an accompaniment to halibut or even lamb. It can be made ahead of time and warmed when needed.

Michael's Asparagus Bread Pudding

1 Medium Red Bell Pepper, small dice
1 Garlic Clove, minced
1 Crusty Baguette (or quarter sheet of Focaccia)
Fresh Thyme, finely chopped 1Tablespoon
Fresh Basil, finely chopped  1 tablespoon
Dried Tarragon   1 Teaspoon
24 oz. Heavy Cream
4 Eggs
4 oz. Grated Asiago Cheese (may substitute with parmesan cheese)

Kosher Salt   1 Tablespoon
White Pepper, ground   1 Teaspoon
Olive Oil   2 Tablespoons

Preset oven to 325.
Chef Michael

Trim the asparagus by cutting off the woody ends. You will probably remove about one quarter of the length of the spears. Reserve the ends.

Place the cream and the reserved asparagus ends together in a medium sauce pot. Place on the stove top and bring to a slow simmer for 10-12 minutes. Be careful the cream does not boil over. Let the asparagus steep in the cream off of the heat for an additional 10 minutes. Remove the asparagus and chill the cream.

Cut the bread into half inch cubes and dry in the oven for 5-7 minutes.

Cut the rest of the asparagus into small pieces.

Heat the olive oil in a medium saute pan. Add the leeks, garlic, red peppers and asparagus and sweat for 5-7 minutes then chill.

Beat the eggs in a large mixing bowl. Add the asparagus cream and whisk together. Add the thyme, basil, tarragon, cheese, salt and pepper and whisk together.

Add the bread and sweated vegetables and mix together until everything is evenly incorporated.

Place mixture in a well buttered or sprayed medium sized casserole dish, taking care to press the mixture evenly.

Cover with a lid or foil and bake for about one hour, removing the lid or foil to brown the top of the pudding for the last 15 minutes.

Our First Wedding

Pamela (Sessum) and Michael Howard
Married November 5, 2005

Howards
Michael and Pamela (Sessum) Howard will celebrate their 5th Wedding Anniversary on November 5, 2010. "With no wedding planner and both Michael and myself working long hours, we needed a lot of help planning and organizing our wedding reception," said Pamela, who retired from her position as a health benefits consultant to stay at home and care for their baby girl. "Lynnwood Convention Center was our life-saver. The staff were so helpful arranging and rearranging our seating plan as the number of guests continued to grow," she continued. "The food was amazing! Everything was flawless. Years later people still talk about the food at our wedding. We just wished we'd had the opportunity to eat some at the wedding!"

Now, Michael and Pamela are blessed with their three-year-old daughter, Josephine, and their two French Mastiffs. Michael works as General Manager for The Keg Restaurant and Steakhouse in Lynnwood.

Michael, Pamela and Josephine enjoy vacationing in Mexico, New York, Las Vegas and Whistler, mountain biking and motorcycle riding and attribute their successful marriage to spending time together.
