History on Lucite
Most of the vintage Lucite beads that our store offers come from 1960's - 1980's West Germany. Our beads also mix beautifully with glass.
Vintage Plastics
begin from Celluloid, Lucite, Bakelite, and Thermoset, Catalin, Moonglow Lucite, and Featherlite - One of the first plastics to be widely used in making jewelry was celluloid. Celluloid is derived from a natural plant fiber. It was originally developed in the 1850's in England. Lucite Lucite is an acrylic resin. It is truly the queen of diversity in jewelry making materials. Lucite was created by DuPont in 1937, who widely licensed it for use in jewelry. It is inexpensive and easy to work with and resulted in lovely carvings and inlays. Lucite was manufactured in a wide variety of colors and runs from the opaque through to transparent. It was at the height of it popularity during the early retro period, from 1940 through the mid 1950s. However, it is still produced and very widely used today. |
