External Threats:
True Cost of a Laptop?
A client of mine left his laptop and briefcase in his car during the lunch hour. He was expected in court at 1:30 that afternoon and figured it would be safe.
It wasn't.
He lost that laptop, and private client information, when thieves broke into his car over lunch.
How much does a typical laptop cost? $1,500 with software installed?
Think again. According to the Ponemon Institute (www.ponemon.org), the average cost of a lost laptop is $49,246.
What sensitive data is saved on laptops in your organization?
- Intellectual Property
- Email Communication
- User Names and Passwords on Internet Sites
- Sensitive Client/Patient Data
- Financial Information
The following should be considered as part of your organization's data security policy:
- Strong Passwords - NOT SHARED
- "Key FOBS" = additional login token
- Offsite handling of laptops
- Specify or limit data allowed to be saved on laptops
- Wi-Fi Hotspot Security guidelines
Data in the hands of the wrong people can be used to harm your organization and/or your customers.
Strong data security measures are imperative in today's business environment. |
