External Threats:

 True Cost of a Laptop?

A client of mine left his laptop and briefcase in his car during the lunch hour.  He was expected in court at 1:30 that afternoon and figured it would be safe.

It wasn't.

He lost that laptop, and private client information, when thieves broke into his car over lunch.

How much does a typical laptop cost?  $1,500 with software installed?

Think again. According to the Ponemon Institute (www.ponemon.org), the average cost of a lost laptop is $49,246.

What sensitive data is saved on laptops in your organization?

  • Intellectual Property
  • Email Communication
  • User Names and Passwords on Internet Sites
  • Sensitive Client/Patient Data
  • Financial Information

The following should be considered as part of your organization's data security policy:

  • Strong Passwords - NOT SHARED
    • "Key FOBS" = additional login token
  • Offsite handling of laptops
  • Specify or limit data allowed to be saved on laptops
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot Security guidelines

Data in the hands of the wrong people can be used to harm your organization and/or your customers.

Strong data security measures are imperative in today's business environment.

Threats Can Lurk Here, Too:

  • External "USB" Drives (fit easily in a pocket or purse)
  • Blackberry, iPhones, other "Smart Phones"
  • Trash Cans (what's in your dumpster?)
  • Employee Social Media Accounts
    • Facebook
    • LinkedIn
    • Personal Blogs
