Greetings!

Well, summer is coming to an end but looking at the sun outside and the temp it sure does not seem like it.  If you are the owner of a firearm, take advantage of it and get out there to the range!  Practice, practice, practice!  Auto owners should also take advantage of the weather to make sure you are ready for the fall and winter. Make sure you have jumper cables, fix-a-flat and a working flashlight at the minimum. Many of us have children going back to school.  Visit our website for tips about the flu and H1N1 to stay on top of how to stay healthy.

Home Defense Training
Do you have a firearm that you plan to use to defend your family in case of a home invasion? One of the most important, if not the most important thing, is to be proficient in its use. Now, is your firearm available for your spouse to use if you are not home and the need to use it arises?  You may feel that you are confident in its use, but are they?  The trouble is that many families will purchase a firearm for home defense that their spouse can use, take them to the range once and then stick it in the bedside table or closet and forget about it.  While that plan may give you a bit of psychological comfort, it is certainly not the best plan of action for dealing with the deadliest of threats.

If your spouse is not a regular shooter, their familiarity and comfort level with a firearm isn't going to be very high. All too often they are given a crash course on how to load, aim, and shoot the home defense gun. The gun is then loaded and put up. When faced with an unforeseen deadly threat we expect them to grab the gun and successfully defend their lives and possibly those of our children.

CDC study: Swine flu deaths higher in older kids

By MIKE STOBBE, AP

ATLANTA - The first detailed study of U.S. children killed by swine flu found the outbreak differs from ordinary flu in at least one puzzling respect: It appears to be taking a higher toll on school-age youngsters than on babies and toddlers.

At least 40 children have died, accounting for about one in 13 U.S. swine flu deaths, scientists with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. Two-thirds of those already had high-risk health problems, confirming what officials have been saying about who is most vulnerable to swine flu.

        College Bound?

Do you have a child leaving for college?  Are you taking some classes at a local campus?  Due to the fact that a college campus has many different age groups as well as ethnic diversity it is harder to identify someone that may not belong.  Here is a link to a website that will allow you to look up the crime statistics for most college campuses in the US.  To quote the old G.I. Joe cartoon, "Knowing is half the battle".   Link

OSC offers the "Refuse To Be A Victim" course that covers personal safety and security on the college campus.  Please contact us if you are interested in attending or would like to schedule a seminar.

Religious Security

Places of worship have always been under threat from those who disagree with the teaching and beliefs of those inside. In Europe and the Middle East we have seen attacks, but now those same attacks and threats of attacks are here in the US as well.

"Home grown" terrorists have made attacks in the US for years, but now our "home grown" terrorists are becoming part of the international threat. It is good to see that religious institutions are taking the threat seriously. The Jewish community has felt this threat, but it is not specific to them. We have seen attacks take place at churches as well lately. Talk to your religious advisor and find out if your place of worship has a plan in case of attack or threat. If not, ask them to start one. Oram Security can help you plan one.

Synagogue Security: Rabbis Learn To Use Firearms
With Houses Of Worship Constantly Under Threat, Former NYC Cop Offers Class Designed To Keep People Inside Safe
Reporting

NEW YORK (CBS)
Go into a synagogue in Queens these days and you may find rabbis learning how to shoot firearms and execute karate kicks.
Some might call it the "God squad," others a proactive approach to safety.

A rabbi in Queens is beginning a training program aimed at keeping places of worship worry free.

Inside a Kew Gardens place of prayer is a team of experts whose goal is to make synagogues safer by teaching martial arts, how to use a gun and protecting worshipers if someone came in with guns blaring.

Child Abuse and Neglect.... can you identify it?
The first step in helping abused or neglected children is learning to recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect. The presence of a single sign does not prove child abuse is occurring in a family, but a closer look at the situation may be warranted when these signs appear repeatedly or in combination.

If you do suspect a child is being harmed, reporting your suspicions may protect the child and get help for the family. Any concerned person can report suspicions of child abuse and neglect. Some people (typically certain types of professionals) are required by law to make a report of child maltreatment under specific circumstances-these are called mandatory reporters.

We have attached a PDF copy of the Child Welfare Information Gateway "Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect: Signs and Symptoms".  Take the time to read it and become more familiar with the signs of child abuse and neglect.

Security Tip
The school year is here and if you have kids old enough, you are probably going to be giving them keys to the home.  If you have a house with multiple entrances (i.e. front door, garage door, back/side door) you should have all except one on the same key.  This way if your child loses the key you only have to replace one lock for home safety.  If you have your back door on its own key, that is the key you should give to family, friends or neighbors.  Then once a year replace the lock with a new key and issue again.  You may trust your friends and family but do you trust all their friends?
