HUBZone Geographic Area changes October 1, 2011

The Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) program helps small businesses in urban and rural communities gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. These preferences go to small businesses that maintain a "principal office" in one of these specifically designated areas that obtain HUBZone certification in part by employing staff who live in a HUBZone.  As of October 1, 2011 the HUBZone Geographic Area has changed.  The United States Small Business Administration has created an information briefing that highlights the HUBZone area changes as a result of the 2010 Census and the impact these changes may have on HUBZone firms - To see this information briefing CLICK HERE.  If you have any questions, please feel welcome to contact the HUBZone helpdesk at hubzone@sba.gov or 202.205.8885.  Check to see that your HUBZone hasn't been affected!

Fall Career Fair at Regency Mall Draws Crowd

The Fall Career Fair held this past Thursday drew in over 600 job seekers to the Regency Mall.  Job Seekers had the opportunity to connect with over 27 employers offering over 300 open job opportunities in a variety of fields.  Most employers attending the event said that they will be hiring candidates with whom they connected.  Workforce Development Center staff were onsite to promote Center programs such as the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC - a nationally recognized, portable credential that proves an individual is work ready) to job seekers in order to better prepare them for the job opportunities offered by our business community.  Also, staff provided opportunities for Job Seekers to adequately prepare them for meeting employers at the event by hosting a booth to provide feedback on their "Elevator Speeches."  View photos here!

PRIDE - Promoting Ready Individuals Discovering Employment

PRIDE is a job group focused on helping W-2 participants to become self sufficient.  Our Mission is to assist and guide job seekers to develop the work skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment as well as connect employers with work ready individuals. Our Vision is to provide basic skills to our members by providing and promoting employment and work experience opportunities in our weekly activities.  If you would like more information about PRIDE, please contact Joel Espinoza, Job Developer and Coach at joel.espinoza@goracine.org or 262-638-6565.

 Career Connect

CareerConnect is an online database that will act as a one-stop-shop for employers, educators, and students who wish to set up career-related learning experience such as guest speaker sessions, mock interviews, internship opportunities, etc.  Kicking off in January 2012, the program initially will be piloted in the Racine Unified and Burlington Area school districts as a part of the Higher Expectations:  Challenge One initiative that supports Racine County students as they strive to be more career or college ready.  More details will be available soon, though interested employers can contact Rachel Messenger at Rachel.Messenger@goRacine.org at any time for further information on how to get involved.
 Hiring Challenges?
Training Funds Available

Are you having a hard time finding qualified workers to fill your positions?  Consider utilizing the funds from the National Emergency Grant for On-the-Job Training to offset the cost of training a new employee with the skills you need. Send an email to Renee.Hansen@GORacine.org and ask her how your company can qualify for reimbursement up to 90% of your new hire's wages during the training period.  It's a simple process, don't wait, these high re-imbursement rates won't be available much longer!
 Employer Spotlight

The Racine County Workforce Development Center is in need of updated photos!  We are looking for businesses that would like to "showcase" their organizations in our building.  If you have any photos of your company, employees, or logos that you would like to share, please let us know.  Once your photos are collected, we will customize and frame a digital photo collage.  These frames will then be displayed throughout the Center in our meeting rooms, hallways, and classrooms.  For more information please contact Len Maki at 262-638-6639.

Thank you DeltaHawk Diesel Engines for sharing your photos!
