Americans are treated, and overtreated, to death
ASSOCIATED PRESS -
Monday, June 28, 2010
The doctors finally let Rosaria Vandenberg go home.
For the first time in months, she was able to touch her 2-year-old daughter who had been afraid of the tubes and machines in the hospital. The little girl climbed up onto her mother's bed, surrounded by family photos, toys and the comfort of home. They shared one last tender moment together before Vandenberg slipped back into unconsciousness.
Vandenberg, 32, died the next day.
That precious time at home could have come sooner if the family had known how to talk about alternatives to aggressive treatment, said Vandenberg's sister-in-law, Alexandra Drane.

A Midsummer's Night
in the Casbah
4th Annual Gala raises more than
$374,000 for NVHADS
Singing waiters surprised and delighted guests enjoying a
Moroccan-inspired feast under starry skies at "A Midsummer's Night in the Casbah," held Saturday, June 19. The successful fourth annual gala and auction raised more than $374,000 for Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services.
Gala Chair Marilyn Asmuth, herself a Hospice volunteer, wove together enticing elements, setting the stage for an enchanted evening. Acclaimed St. Helena designer Erin Martin's breathtaking transformation of the beautiful Castello di Amorosa included exotic hanging lanterns, elaborate mirrored panels and lush Persian carpets suspended from balconies and parapets.

Paul Asmuth congratulates his wife, Gala Chair Marilyn Asmuth (left) and honorary Gala Chair Beth Nickel.
Honorary Chair Beth Nickel accepted her award with
characteristic modesty and praised the organization for the tender end-of-life care they provided to her late husband Gil.
"When Gil was dying of melanoma a few years ago," she said, "our beloved doctors assured us that we would be very well taken care of by the remarkable people at Hospice. Not only did they take perfect care of Gil and provide for his every medical need, they also took perfect care of me by guiding me through the process, answering every question and arranging for everything we needed."
Clearly moved by the heartfelt comments, the crowd responded with generosity, as auctioneer Fritz Hatton offered an impressive array of 30 live auction lots. Bidders snapped up premier wines, luxury travel and one-of-a-kind experiences. They also raised their paddles high to "Fund a Need," giving from their hearts to support the work of Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services.
Popular Master Sommelier Gilles de Chambure served as master of ceremonies, introducing Board Chair Steve Silva who recognized the work of many who had contributed to making the evening a success, including Dario Sattui of the Castello di Amorosa who once again demonstrated his support of the organization by donating the use of the unparalleled location for the evening.
"I can't thank you enough," Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services President & CEO Linda Gibson told the cheering crowd, as she announced the proceeds from the evening and invited guests into a "Dessert and Dolce" reception. "Your incredible generosity allows us to continue to serve the residents of Napa County with compassionate care, for the whole family, during the end stages of life. We couldn't do it without you!"
